So I am watching the Pantera Behind The Music lastnight. At one point it occured to me that if Dime were alive today my guess is you two would have built a Dime Sig amp by now. What a great amp that would have been!!??!! I watched the NAMM vids with you and Jason. Killer stuff all the way around. My question is which of the Fortin designed Randalls would cop Dimes tone best?

Also can you give us any word on the Headhunter?

Jim

Mike is en route to Germany for Musikmesse as we speak so he will probably not respond to this for a few days. He will be slammed there no doubt about it.

Awesome question though.

Jason if you were to pick one of the new Randalls to cop the Pantera tone which would be your choice? Thanks for chiming in!

Why not just get the real deal.....an old SS Randall? I really don't think anything with a tube power section is going to cop a "dead on" Dime tone. There is a reason he chose SS amps. I would think.....or at least hope that any Fortin designed tube amp would sound better than Dime, but not necessarily perfect for his tone. Does that make sense? Forgive me if I'm late to the party and Fortin is now designing SS amps. FWIW, I'm a huge Dime fan and grew up with them playing small clubs here in Fort Worth. The best "tube" amp I've ever used for copping Vulgar-era tones was the Engl Fireball.

I have never played an SS amp I really liked. I used to own an Engl Powerball and I know what you're talking about. The Engls get close.

I agree with the SS amps. I've never liked them for anything but that Dime sound. About 10-15 years ago, every local metal band here was using Randalls due to Dime's influence. Everyone sounded the same. I chased that sound for awhile and I had 2 winners........an old carpeted RG100ES with a boost and MXR EQ was one of them. However, I got closest with a Peavey XXL with an EQ in the loop. But yeah.......the Engl's get REAL close.

Yeah I think Mikes Thrasher could prolly get close to Dimes tone but nail some other tones as well. I am a Dime fan but would never buy an amp that only did that tone. Dime's tone was cool for certain things but it's hardly the only tone I like. Besides I cannot imagine any SS amp sounding as good as one of the better tube amps except maybe a Kemper or Axe but thats another thread. Basically I am just curious as to which of the newly designed Randalls gets close to the Dime tone and if there has been any news on the Fortin/Lynch design that is the Headhunter.

Yo Jim!

The Thrasher can get close no doubt...however, there will be some new hybrid Randall stuff coming that I think will nail the Dime tone and beyond. The new RG series is close as well but Mike did not design any of them. He will be doing design work on the new hybrid series though.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wasn't his original tone always derived from the randall c200 heads?

Dime's was an RG100ES

He used both. CFH and TGSK (I think) were the RG100ES, and Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven were the Century 200 if I remember correctly. That's definitely what it was for CFH and VDOP, but I get fuzzy about the other ones. Reinventing the Steel is in there somewhere too, but I really don't remember about that one.

i think he switched back to the rg100 for trendkill....but you have it right....

anyone ever play a c200? very dry, not the gain you'd expect....those furmans are a huge part of his deal IMHO

Wasn't Krank making him an all tube high gainer which he was touting as being the amp that finally turned him on to tubes? Then he passes and we go back to all this SS nonsense :)

I'm interested above all in the Headhunter. You know, the amp Lynch has had in the works for 5 years and probably won't play on stage once he gets it..

my question would be: which new randall amp would be the closest to Jason's evil pumpkin hulk mod marshall
his live tone with his band is absolutely killer and has that pantera in-your-face dry and tight tone without sounding solid state

I'm waiting for an updated rd50 that's still stuck in the customs
