So I hit him up a few months ago to tell him how excited I was to land a rare project of his, second hand. And he asks me if I want this wah he modded that brings the hairy tongue out of Ian Thornley to go with it.
Uhhh.... Yeah!!
Told me he'd get back to me in a bit on a price. So he gets ahold of me later and says,
"I've seemed to have run into an embarrassing situation. I've misplaced that wah pedal. I think it must be with Ian Thornley. I apologize for that. I'll make it up to you at a later date."
I just laughed and told him I'd let Ian off the hook... This time. And that was that.
Fast forward a month to my anniversary with my wife. She hands me a gift - The wah in its box with Mike's business card on it. And I'm stunned...
APPARENTLY, she got ahold of Mike after he offered this pedal and asked him to hold off and give any excuse. Sold it, lost it - whatever. He didn't wanna full on Kelso burn me to say that he found another buyer, so he told me the Thornley bit.
Because she wanted to get me a gift that really meant something to me. She knows I love gear and Mike's work, so she intervened and worked with Mike to surprise me and totally pulled it off in a big way.
Now... That rare second hand project you're probably curious about.
That deal was going south right under my nose despite my ignorance to see it for what it was. The guy strung me along for WEEKS after I was able to send him payments within minutes of contacting him to deal, telling me how busy he was. Out of the country. Tried sending from the post office but forgot his wallet - the list goes on for an entire month.
But Mike knew the guy. He was also privy to his bullshit and knew that it was all just par for the course with him. I hadn't realized this yet. But Mike checked in every once in a while, asking if I'd taken delivery yet. Eventually after I kept telling him no but remaining hopelessly hopeful, he got tired of it FOR me and gave me an indication of the type of scum I was dealing with, without going into dramatics of divulging details. Because he's a professional. In every aspect.
So, he insisted that I cancel, get a refund and said he'd just make me a new build from scratch. He asked me what he charged me. And when it was completed, that's what he had me pay. Used price for a new 100% hand made build. With zero obligation whatsoever.
We don't know each other beyond a few dealings. I don't rub elbows with the guy for any special favors. I'm just another satisfied customer. And Mike... Mike is THE man. So move along with this petty schoolyard bullshit already.
