Introducing the new Mini-Rig-of-Doom.

I've been trying to find a way to pull off big tone in a small package for 4 or 5 years now and up until now I've always come up short. I tried the combo thing and that was a failure (boxy and weak). Tried the 30w thing and that was a failure (no headroom, sounded like mush). Tried the 2x12 thing and that was alright (good crunch/thump, but really directional and harder to hear than a 4x12). This new set of cabs seems to have it down though.

It's an open back 1x12 stacked on a thiele 1x12. The top provides the detail and spreads the sound while the thiele provides the thump while avoiding the boxy sound of a closed back 1x12. It's no replacement for a 4x12... but it's a useful tool to have in my back pocket.

I'm not sure how well it'll mic up, but it should be good for small venues where there's little to no guitar running through the PA.

Cool!

I've got the Mark IV version...and it really is a mini rig of doom. I agree that it won't replace a 4x12, but it does sound fantastic for such a small, portable rig. And plenty loud!

What speakers are you running? I have an Eminence Delta Pro 12 in my theile (it's a little bit smoother than the EVM12) and a Scumback M75-65 watt in the open back. I used to have an EVM in the open back cab, but I really prefer the scumback...the highs aren't as piercing. Although cranking it with the Delta/EVM combo was pretty awesome...super tight and responsive.

Right now both are running the stock MC-90s. My plan for now is to see how they sound once broken and with a band, then I'll make a call on whether or not I'll change anything.

Nice ROD you got there
I always liked those thiele cabs

Nice compact rig--me likey.

On another note, anyone know how the Mark V sounds "going direct?" Is this even possible with the slave out on the Mark V?

Cheers,

Cheers,

It has a slave out. Post power amp and tapped off the speaker out if I remember correctly. It's a raw signal so you'd want a speaker sim on it if you're going to DI it.

I slaved it into my Recto once for shits and giggles... but it was at night so without the ability to crank anything it wasn't really all that impressive.

You went almost exactly the way I just did. I need a much smaller rig for auditions. Really scared people showing up with a 20 space w/d/w rigs.

TC G-System module in back of rack. 2 dirt pedals. So the mine stack and a 4 space rack on top, and the G-System controller. Mesa Thieles - 12L on the bottom and SRO on top.

What exactly is an SRO? I've been seeing it mentioned a bunch lately on various forums, but I don't know anything about it beyond the obvious (that it's a speaker).

The sad part is that I still manage to hit the wrong buttons...

...makes me realize why so many guitarists let their techs do their switching for them.

It's an older Alnico EVM. Has a huge "coffee can" Magnet. Breaks up much earlier than a 12L. Just blends perfectly with the 12L to me.

Is it essentially a 12L with an Alnico magnet? Or something totally different?

That's awesome! I'm a major fan of the Mark series, and those thelie 1X12's are my favorite cabs. I've given up on 4x12's. Tired of transporting them. I'm happy with my 1x12, and if I need anything more, I'll add another. Doesn't weigh a damn thing, but it puts out bass like you wouldn't believe.

I have a mini rig of doom too! But one of the places we play , the stage is so unlevel I have to stack them seperatley since the head is a lil unstable on top of the 410.
