What would you feel comfortable with and where would you draw the line?

Band ppractice. No miced cabs. Metal music, fairly loud drummer.

Considering a diavlo. Want the 20w to record but could I keep up with a drummer?

I would do at least the 50 watt version of that amp. Always can turn it down......cant crank it up if its maxed.

I gotta say a jca20h into a celestion loaded 4x12 can get pretty LOUD with the master around 4-5
but past that, low end starts getting flubby
bet the diavlo rd20h could do the job well, but I'd go for the rd45 anyway

Man, you guys are loud...
We never practice quietly and my Orange dual terror holds up fine on the 15 watt setting as long as I didn't need pristine cleans. And my other guitarist plays a 6505, lol!
By no means is it my only amp and I usually gig with something else. But gatdam, I've never felt under gunned at practice with it. he'll, I've been told to turn it down at gigs, haha

Just reread that you want it for metal. We played a variety of classic and 80s rock and the dual terror was fine. But for pure metal I'd prefer a 50 watt for extra thumpage. Still don't think it'd be absolutely unnecessary though. Especially through a 4x12.

Enclosed room with raised solid stage and no plexi panels? 30W

Outside, hollow wooden stage, loud ass drummer, and shitty PA? Two 120W heads in stereo.

Over 9000!!!!!

Since you're playing metal, I'd go with no less than 50. Most people playing metal want a tight, defined low end, and the less headroom you have, the quicker this falls apart. If you need clean tones you may be pushing it with just 50. I prefer 120w all tube with at least 2 4x12's. That's what I'm currently using for rehearsal, but I have to keep up with another guitarist, bass, keyboards and drums.

Thanks for the replies.

This was my thought exactly.

I do prefer my 100w as well but I am selling it for some extra funds and just looking to be loud enough to jam with a loud drummer for now. When we gig I will be buying another amp.

I'm strictly a 50 and 100 watter kind of guy. For band practice I guess how hard your drummer bangs the skins. if you have a hard hitter 30watts could be a challenge but if not it could be plenty. I always like having as much power as possible whether you use it or not.

It depends a bit on your tone too. If you like mids you could go with lower power, maybe a 15w? If you scoop scoop scoopity then more.

Not much of a scooper.

On my VHT like mids at 1:00-2:00

I'd say minimum whatever Marty was pumping in Doc Brown's lab...

A 30 Watt tube amp is only 5 DB quieter than a 100 watt tube head.
Not sure how loud a 100 watt tube head is, but take 5 db off that and it's still fucking loud!!!
Too loud for any room. Too loud for your ears. Too loud to discern the tone you are chasing.
Your concern should be about headroom and tone and not about volume.
My neighbors across the street can hear my Ironball at 1 watt through double-glazed glass.
Unless I'm gigging outdoors I will never buy anything with more power than 25 watts, and that's being generous.

I've heard nothing but good things about those new Randall 45 watters. Haven't gotten to play one myself yet, but I'll get around to it.
I'd suggest a 50 watt 5153 but I'm assuming you've already looked into it.
