The only 3 modern metal bands that really do anything for me are...Intronaut, Enslaved and Mastodon. Opeth were untouchable up until Watershed, but the last album wasn't great. 99% of the current crop of metal is absolute garbage.

Recommendations of that style please! Post-black metal in particular, or progressive metal generally. I have listened/know very well all of the major bands, so particularly looking for any interesting but less well-known examples!

Ill probably get flamed for this but the little music that i hear that isnt classic metal or hendrix or SRV is Avenged Sevenfold and from what ive heard from them on the brief times i listen to the radio they arent too bad, definatly not extreme growling metal but they play some tasteful harmonies and some pretty decent leads. Also KSE is ok.. nothing like the classics and the 3 best albums ever made "Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice for all" i should clarify those are the 3 best metal albums ever in my book...

A lot of stuff these days sounds the same. Every band out now has a perfect mix on their records where it sounds like there's no human element anymore in it, especially the drums. In fact, I find it refreshing to listen back to older stuff and like the fact that the recordings don't sound perfect.

If you like Opeth you should check the last two or three records from Katatonia

Thanks. High on Fire are a bit stoner for me but will check out the others.

avoid any band with names longer than one word and stick to european bands and you'll probably be ok!
Check out Black tide (only the first album), anything by korpiklaani, Firewind.

I picked up Yellow & Green from Baroness a couple months ago and kind of fell in love with it after a few listens. Went back and bought their Blue album also which is a little bit heavier.

Same thing happened with Mastodon's Crack the Skye accept my next purchase was their newer release.

I love all kinds of metal. I dig a lot of the newer stuff because of the sonic brutality. I'm also into a few instrumental rock/metal bands as well.

Instrumental:
-Russian Circles
-Pelican
-Jakob
-If These Trees Could Talk

IMHO, all of the above bands have something to offer to the metal/progressive crowd. YMMV.

Ultra-heavy modern bands I dig:
-Fit for an Autopsy
-Whitechapel
-Within the Ruins
-Thy Art is Murder
-Soreption

Heavy yet progressive:
-Between the Buried and Me
-The Contortionist
-Tesseract
-Gojira
-Odium

Their older stuff was, considering Matt came from the band Sleep. Their last few albums have been great though. They're more thrashy and have better tone these days. Matt is playing a SLO, and he lost his fuzz pedal.

I saw Anciients open up for Death, and they blew me away. You might really dig them.

Not including classic metal bands (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Pantera, etc., who I listen to on a regular basis), and Opeth, Mastodon, and Meshuggah, who you've already mentioned, the 10 metal albums I've listened to the most over the past 5 years are:

Threat Signal- Under Reprisal
Periphery (self titled)
Nevermore- This Godless Endeavour
Killswitch Engage- Alive or Just Breathing
Isis- Panopticon
Tesseract (self titled)
Devin Townsend- Accelerated Evolution
Dethklok- Dethalbum II (although they are all good- the lyrics may joke around, but the music is badass!)
Lamb of God- Sacrament
Soilwork- The Living Infinite

Still some big names who you've probably checked out already, but hope this helps! Tool's working on a new album as we speak, can't wait for that one to come out. My friend was also raving about the new Helloween album, but I haven't heard it yet. Cheers,

Revocation is easily my current favorite metal band. Dave Davidson is fucking shred master :rawk:

So damn badass

Anything involving Keith Merrow, including and especially his solo instrumental stuff, is great. What ruins most modern metal for me is the vocals. Just such a fine line between amazing and just too over the top, caricature of metal. Case in point for me: Meshuggah. I love the instrumentation, just cannot get into the vocals. Anyone else feel like this?

Why has nobody mentioned Gojira or Sylosis?

I mentioned Gojira. :D

I did forget Sylosis though. Great band as well!

Yeah those dudes in Revocation are some crazy beer-fueled loons!

EDIT: Existence is Futile is an awesome listen. I like David's approach to guitar. He manages to blend a ton of styles together and make it his own.

Also, check out Demiricous. The definitely didn't get the love they deserve. Killer band.
