Human Abstract would probably be up your alley.

Also, Textures.

Gojira is a monster, literally and figuratively. King of the modern metal heap.

A lot of stuff these days sounds the same. Every band out now has a perfect mix on their records where it sounds like there's no human element anymore in it, especially the drums. In fact, I find it refreshing to listen back to older stuff and like the fact that the recordings don't sound perfect.

Agreed. Sometimes I rather listen to older metal and rock, simply because a lot of music nowadays sounds way too digital, if you get what I mean. Almost too perfect, too catchy, and too well mixed. almost robotic, but there are some records I do like that are fairly new, but a lot that I don't.

Is modern metal a style of music? Or does it just mean current metal?

I really like Inepsy. Basically a more modern version Motorhead.

Revocation is easily my current favorite metal band. Dave Davidson is fucking shred master :rawk:

INSANE! I came in here to post about Revocation and voila! Fucking magnificent band!

I love all kinds of metal. I dig a lot of the newer stuff because of the sonic brutality. I'm also into a few instrumental rock/metal bands as well.

Instrumental:
-Russian Circles
-Pelican
-Jakob
-If These Trees Could Talk

IMHO, all of the above bands have something to offer to the metal/progressive crowd. YMMV.

Ultra-heavy modern bands I dig:
-Fit for an Autopsy
-Whitechapel
-Within the Ruins
-Thy Art is Murder
-Soreption

Heavy yet progressive:
-Between the Buried and Me
-The Contortionist
-Tesseract
-Gojira
-Odium

Yep.

arch enemy
lamb of god
down
devildriver
allagaeon
daath
machinehead

Yeah those dudes in Revocation are some crazy beer-fueled loons!

EDIT: Existence is Futile is an awesome listen. I like David's approach to guitar. He manages to blend a ton of styles together and make it his own.

Also, check out Demiricous. The definitely didn't get the love they deserve. Killer band.

Yeah they were great. The guitar player Scott from my old death metal band MercyKill joined them after the recording of "Two: Poverty"

Ive been lustening to lots of...

Brain Drill
Nociceptor
Scar Symmetry
Threat Signal
Beneath the Massacre
The Absence
Machine Head
Macabre
F.K.U.
and Exodus.

Old band but new album

These guys seem OK

My favorite metal band I've found in quite a while but more old school Death metal sounding...Danyeo, real drums etc in here.

Sikth
Aliases, which is comprised of a couple Sikth guys
Art By Numbers
Beneath the Massacre
Exotic Animal Petting Zoo
The Crinn

Although they are not really a "modern metal" band, they are the most recent music i have really cared for with their release of "The Burning Red" they took a shot at alot of the crap that was becoming popular. Though their best disc was "Burn My Eyes" with such classics as the raging "Davidian" to the killer intro into raging metal on "A Nation on Fire" and the best riff in any metal recording since the hey days of metallica and that riff is the main riff on "OLD" that song in paticular makes my crush, kill and destroy :)
The best part is that they are still writing new material and touring constantly...
Then there's Children of Bodom whose first couple albums were masterpieces especially "Hate Crew Death Roll" We're the hate crew we stand and we wont fall, we are for not and not for all, fuck you we'll fight to the fist, we sure as hell aint takin no shit!

Add these young pups to the list. I think the oldest member of the band is 22.

These dudes are friends of mine and I hope they see the success they're shooting for. Very talented group of guys.
