What's the scoop on these amps? I know the Mojave Peacemaker is a killer amp. How's the scorpion?

It's great but way to expensive and you need to crank it almost on 10 to get it to distort or use pedals for your distortion should you not want to crank it.
Hotplate recommended if you want to get the distortion from the amp.

plus,

my brief dealings are that the amp contains the telltale mojave growl, and breaks up sooner than the peacemaker, so you're closer to the flutter factor without a pedal, but i found that pulling two tubes on a peacemaker gets you pretty close and has more "shoulders" to the tone..meatier lows.

but if you intend to run a wet/dry rig, which i HIGHLY encourage, any lack of highs or lows can be restored on the wet rig for a completely amazing tone period. and the wet "space" liquidifies the sound so it feels slinkier without added front end gain, although i'd still want a pedal for the feather trigger factor.

zach loved using the mesa 395 w/ the peacemaker because it's voicing/eq features added the boogie low/deep punch to the mojave marshallistic tight roar, and sparkling headroom for the effects. i really hope he finds another peacemaker or the new stuff and a 395 for his mega rig because it will be a tone that destroys most any rock tone you can imagine.
i loved running my peacemaker and coyote together.

and man i cannot tell you how killer his vaporware amps he's building now sound....i play so many amps that are great and i think sound sweet, but his amps make me want them now!

Is the power dampening any good? Why 4 12ax7's? Does it have an extra gain stage or something? What is the purpose of the two mid adjustments? Is that really necessary?

Please note the Hot Plate. You will need it. The Scorpion was not really any less of an amp than my Peacemaker, I would just step up and do that if seriously considering it.

So the power dampening sucks?

It's ok if you want to get the thing down to loud band practice level, but if you are looking for bedroom volume for some reason, get a hotplate or put in a proper PPIMV...

No extra gain stage. There are no cascading mods in a Mojave Scorpion. Normally, in a Marshall Super Lead, side A on V1 is the normal channel and side B is the brite. In a Scorpion, V1 is the normal channel and V2 is the brite and sides a and b are paralleled so that on V1 and V2 there is a jumper conecting pins 1&6, 2&7 and 3&8. The reason there are only one set of hi and low inputs is because the 2 sets of paralleled grids are jumpered internaly.

The high mid is just the presence control on a Marshall labeled differently.

there a nice amp,but for the money i would just get a metroamp and get a PPIMV.use the PPIMV with an attenuator and it should get you where you want to be.if money is no object then get the mojave its a fine amp..

You can buy a used PeaceMaker for $1200 if you look around...

Thanks for the info, If I buy anything it'll be used. I'd never seen or heard a Mojave in person, but the other guitar player in my band got one of the little 12 watt Coyotes, and he's already got a brown note, 2061X, and Reinhardt, and that little Coyote shocked me at how good it sounded. The Peacemakers too much wattage, the coyote not enough, the Sidewinder has a tube rectifier, and it looks like the scorpions going to be too loud too.
