1/4 Jack Tone differences(?!)

I’d like to see confirmation that the temperature was the exact same for each clip. Fuzz pedals are known to sound different based on temperature. (germanium)

Don’t forget to clean jacks on guitars, amps, cabinets, pedals, etc. They get dirty and corrode. Also, clean all cable ends. I try to do this at least once or twice a years with everything I own.

My testing wasn't done through a fuzz pedal.

I am not the creator of that video.

I used my various guitars straight into my Rivera, with nothing else plugged in.

The variances were very similar to what was heard in the video.

Just a reminder that this is a thing.

I went through several different jacks on the same guitar a couple nights ago and was surprised by the differences.

I just took home my bassist's queer phaser to clean the jack on it. I didn't think to get the gun bore brushes out though. I'm pretty sure I got one for the .22 that'll work. I'll get that thing sounding swooshy again.

I used to buy those 4 contact point jacks and they're okay but i don't buy them anymore.

I haven't bought any of those but I actually think I like the sound of the Switchcraft Mil. Spec jacks the best. They used to use them on old fender amps. I like the sound of them with guitars and cabs.

Lost the swoosh eh? That's like salt without flavor - useless.

Hello all,

Went to replace the 1/4 jack on my cabinet due to the old one looking a bit rough due to the previous wiring from the factory (They had a built in attenuator installed that was always slightly in the circuit that I had to remove).

Was just going to buy one when I thought about the various options available.

I found this comparison on YT and almost could not believe my ears.

They actually sound different??

I did not think between the same metals and style of jack, there would be this much of a tonal difference heard.....

What say ye, RigTalk??

in the 90s had to convert an end of one of my patch cables from a straight to a 90 and ran to a local radio shack to grab their flat chrome 1/4” 90 end with the little insulation paper flap and screws to hold the housing together.

it sounded so bad i thought i had messed up the soldering. it was like a low pass filter. waited until i got an order of gls ends and we were back in business.

a few of my shop owner friends and i have done the a/b testing of instrument, speaker and power cables. there are very apparent changes that occur with each cable swap in the chain.

I did some shootouts with various cables of the same lengths from different manufacturers, same thing with patch and and speaker cables, including wiring inside the cabinet. Wild how each little thing in the chain adds to the EQ equation.

I think given 12 clips with 2 each of those 6 jacks, I would bet heavily against anyone on this thread who says they're able to pair up the 6 pairs by jack.

Did you happen to listen to the video, by chance? What you hear through YT compression, is exaggerated in real life. I believe there is a good percentage of people unable to hear the difference, but there definitely are EQ differences between them all that I have replicated with clips in real life. It also depends highly in the rig. Some rigs dont show things as much as others, but a crispy clean Rivera running NOS blackplates reveals a lot.

If you're interested in taking me up on the other side of my bet, and that interest is backed by enough $$$, I will happily oblige.

However I don't make a policy of arguing with people about what they can or can't hear, only betting.

Did you watch that video or no? You can hear it in the dudes video.

As I said, I never argue who can't or can't hear what. But I will happily bet them about it if the $$$ is big enough to be worth the trouble.

These posts I have already gotten out of you are worth big bucks.

"Yeah I've never been able to get along totally with either the two post or six screw strat trem."

I think given 12 clips with 2 each of those trems, I would bet heavily against anyone on this thread who says they're able to pair up the 6 pairs by trem.
