Anyone played or owned both? Which one did you like better? how did they compare? I want to pair them up with two RI greenbacks in an oversized 4 x 12. retro 30 has been getting some great reviews... but so has the lynchback.

GO!

WGS is great but to save my sanity, I have stuck with Celestion. I have a cab with V30s, one with K-100s and one with Lynchbacks. Love them all for different reasons. Keep in mind, these will all sound very different depending on the amp and cab! Some people find the Lynchbacks to be bright. In my Splawn 412, with my amps, they are on the darker, smoother side. Go figure...

Well I'm a Marshall guy so these will be paired with a JCM800, Lynchbox with Brahma/Judge/scary modules and a plexi or plexi clone here or there. So I suppose these would be brighter amps.

The comparison clips I have heard put the Lynchback in a darker spot than say a Greenback. I would buy the Lynchback if I was in your shoes. If they made the things in 16 ohms, I would have already bought them!

Thanks for the input.. i might be the only one, but i tend to find RI greenbacks to still have bite. (like most celestions) Right now I just put in my old sammi 50 watt korean high powered greenback clone that were all the rage a few years back on the 18 watt forum. Not too shabby. Just had to get the super V's out of there. Too much grit.

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead..without Richedie to help me out, not sure i'll come up with an answer but here is to hoping. Almost 6 months later, I'm wondering if more people have had experience with the retro30 and Lynchback? I've now moved away from two greenbacks and currently have paired up two weber legacy speakers with two eminence Lynch Super V12 (I know i said i had just pulled them.... put em back in and now i see why i pulled them! ) Not sure why but they just fell out of favour with me when i really dug them early on. The RI greenbacks continued to bug me on the sharp high end and the eminence have this tight fizzy tone to them I'm not sure i'm digging anymore. I've also considered seeing if I can just trade a pair of greenbacks and two eminence super V's in an avatar cab for a 1960 lead cab with well worn in G12T-75's! I know, crazy. Right now my preference is to put everything through my jcm800 combo with a single Weber in it. As such, still flirting with either two retro30's or two lynchbacks which are considerably more expensive for me.

I would get 4 Lynchbacks and be done with it. There is nothing fizzy or sharp about them.

I do not like the Retro 30's. They are not a bad sounding speaker per se.....they just don't sound like anything I'm used to. They do not sound like an improved Vintage 30 to my ears. They have a grainy quality that leaves a lot of hair around the notes.

That's the info I was looking for. Grainy quality around the notes is prob something i would not dig. You used to be an all weber guy, how do you find the lynchbacks compare?

I love the Lynchbacks. Favorite speaker.

I also like the Retro 30 and I do not find it grainy at all. My Retro 30 is warmer and more balanced than my Vintage 30s.

The Retro 30s sounded really good to me... Not shrill or grainy to my ears. Clear, maybe a little bright but in a good way, not harsh.

Anyways The lynchbacks have a bit more of that celestion character where the WGS are a little dryer. The Lynchbacks are pretty midrange focused from what I remember.
