Just wondering... What's the highest gain/ balls to the wall, Marshall Plexi modification that's out there, that doesn't venture into 800 territory or sound like a modded 800?

Just so you know................most modded plexi type marshalls smoke stock 800s in the gain department. You can do mods that up the gain around 10-15% with no diode clipping and do some filtering to get easy VH and 80s stuff with a boost.

Sorry if I miss understood you.

My amp, the Fortin Evil Pumpkin, is the most brutal plexi mod that I have personally heard. No Jose crap and not really related to an 800 at all. Tight, brutal, articulate. Awesome. If I do say so myself. :D

What I mean is that plexi's sound different than 800's. To me, they're clearer and have a bit less hair. I like plexi tones, but I'm not into the 800 tones as much. To rephrase my question- What is the highest gain plexi modification/ modder who's moddification doesn't sound like a JCM800 or a modded 800?

Does that make sense?

Ok, Killertone's responce would be correct then.

Nobody has that much beast in a plexi shell.

Friedman Dirty Shirley.. Ive played it twice now, loud and it fits your description.

A lot of Plexis are converted to 800 specs as part of the mod to add gain so it might look like a Plexi on the outside but it's not on the inside.

but it sounds like he wants as simple as possible, plexi tone and feel, but more of it gain wise.

sounds to me like he wants a wolf in sheeps clothing modification if you ask me.

if that were the case Mike's Hulk mod in a Plexi headshell is probably the most brutul i have seen to date. Nothing has come close to it yet.

If you're trying to keep the old school vintage Plexi character, just with over the top gain, I'd say a Fortin Cali or a Friedman Angry Hippie. The Cali has lots of flexibility & options. It can be setup to sound modern, but you can even set it to stock with the ability to dial in more gain. The Angry Hippie is straight up old school Plexi tone & feel so I wouldn't choose it if you're looking to dial in modern tones or are looking for a big chunky low end. Think of it as a Plexi, just more aggressive & lots more gain available than stock.

Here is a Phase Three mod I did. Has a modern and vintage input, Metro loop, and depth control. I am working on a new mod I am calling the "Rage Mod" I should have it done soon. It will be sporting full clean channel, DC heaters, and solo boost with dual footswitch.

Martin Golub Aldrich mod. Simple, added tube gain stage. Reasonably priced and good work from a pro.

Well he is busy now making amps for some small time band and getting a rather small amp company back on track, special orders may take awhile........................

No offense to Martin's work but bringing that to the same dominating shoot-out as a Hulk type mod is like bringing a thimble to a John Holmes look-a-like contest.

I don't think the OP is after anything "Hulk-ish" in nature.
