In other news...have you ever tried Manlius pickups? I have a buddy who loves them.

I had Mick custom build a one-off pup for the bridge position for one of my guitars after a few detailed exchanges and a boutique amp and pedal builder I have know for some time recommended him to me - "Custom PAF" (Alnico II, 8.45K I believe). Worth checking out and a good man that will work with you some. I ended up selling it off as it did not have the mids I was looking for (too scooped). I believe he felt he could not do anymore for me so it ended there. I'm pretty particular and his stuff has pups have good tone.

Cool thinking about trying an asphalt. Great prices!

The Asphalt does seem a pickup I might like and you cannot beat the prices. I am curious about this one, but I really do prefer Wades pickups and they have worked wonderfully in almost everyone of my guitars.

Is that our own RT Fuzzyguitars? I think I'm going to try a set.

Found a thread where manlius describes the asphalt as his version of the bk nailbomb FYI.

The description given above a few posts:
Snatches the airy top end of the early originals with a touch of juicy warmth. Hefty, tight lows. Very balanced midrange that is very complex in overtones with the availability of true glory on volume rolls while remaining organic and strong with a tremendous touch response.

This reads like a wine taster's report more than a pickup's sound. I swear, the more I read about amps and pups and the like, the more I think I'm reading about fine dining and wining in different foodies' parts of the world. Then there's the "comparison to a sportscar" description of an amp - you know "get 'er past noon and she starts to pull away like a freight train"...

Ah, crazy stuff

I had a set of Manlius Custom Hots......Hot was an understatement at 22k on the bridge and 19k on the neck. I obviously picked the wrong set.

Now I have a Smits M-Tone Alnico 2 that measures 12k and I love it. It has the EQ curve of A2 but the tightness/articulation of A5. I can't imagine anything better for my all Mahogany (no maple cap) Les Paul.

I also have an M-Tone Ceramic that measures 16k in my neck through mahogany Carvin. I would HIGHLY suggest Smits. I know I have personally been let down by many of the BKP offerings. My favorite pups are the Smits M-Tones and the Suhr DSH+.

Lol V. Really! I'm crying right now because you are absolutely right!

I think it's the lack of understanding what information is actually useful.

Hey pickup winos err umm winders! We need dc resistance, relative output, resonant peak, relative eq spectrum ,and magnet type!

I've had the db signature and the chainsaw and I agree smits rules. I just posted in another thread I created about them. More peeps should know.

Also need inductance (Henries) for output.

Agreed that it sounded good but the pickup is only a small part of the overall equation. With an Axe-FX and a lot of gain, I can get a single coil to sound fat with clarity and balls.

The true test of what a pickup can do is to use a low to medium gain dirty tone...think dimed plexi or 800, cranked Deluxe Reverb or AC30, etc. That will tell the true story of a pickup's voice.

Totally agree with this.

Clean tones are how I "hear" a pickup. I can really tell where the pickup's focus is in a good clean tone through a tube amp.

the manlius stuff is great for PAF stuff.

Killer prices and really nice guy.

chat him up and he wont steer you wrong.

i get that jason and id rather have him play his strengths too, but i cant help but feel that if he is running a BUSINESS he needs another person to handle this stuff if he can't. i dunno why the crappy site irks me so much, i guess i just like to do my shopping alone and quietly.

maybe its just me, yeah thats it im just a little weird. then again the greatest pickups on the planet SHOULD have a killer site with clear and concise sound descriptions.

No Rick, it's not just you I completely agree with your point. He should get someone to do update the site for him. His prices have gone way up since I bought from him so he should put a tad bit of that into site upkeep. Wouldn't take much at all. Just some info would be nice!

I stopped being interested because of that exact thing.

hey!

that is me!

I just ordered an Asphalt from Manlius. Looking forward to checking it out in my LP Classic.

Ordered and Aspalt at the end of last week and it is shipping today!

Asphalt's absolutely kill. I was the first person to get the Asphalts as they came from a custom wind I ask for after ordering and playing some custom hots, I do have the emails to back this up. I tried to get him to name them "Cory O'Bryant signature sets" but couldn't convince him. I me what they basically are is custom set with A5 mags and a under wound neck pickup to get better clean tones. I will not order pickups from anyone else anymore. He is a standup guy that has under promised over delivered on every one of his builds for me, and his prices are unbelievable.

I got my bridge Asphalt on Friday (delivered in less than 1 1/2 weeks after I ordered it). Just wired it up and I freaking love this pickup in my LP Classic. It sounds huge!
