Mr. Scary in NMV 1959HW

Hey everyone,

I had a question about running a Mr. Scary Hot Mod in my 1959HW.

I heard you need to shield a wire or wires on one of the tube sockets to prevent squeal / oscillation, I noticed I had gotten that noise when I try to turn the volume up anywhere past 12 o’clock when using a Hot Mod V2 in the past, and I assume the more gain on tap with the Mr Scary would exaggerate the squeal.

I’m thinking it’s time to take it to a tech to get the procedure done but want to confirm what they’d need to do to try to mitigate the noise if it’s possible with a NVM amp.

For some context It doesn’t have a Master Volume mod and if possible I’d like try to keep it that way (I use a Mesa Cab Clone IR+ for an attenuator to make it somewhat possible to be in the same state with it when it’s being used.)

Thanks for any and all replies!

I dont think its your problem. Im using a nmv as well.

There was a really good spot to earth it behind the v2 tube. Clip it then install mr scary.

If your using an attentuator. That is likely your squeal.

I thought it just clips on? As in the wire, there is a little alligator clip to hold onto something.
Thanks for the reply! The Hot Mod usually is plug and play but apparently with this reissue and early Marshalls a signal wire is unshielded that leaves it vulnerable to noise from what I understand.

Hmm okay I could try the Rock Crusher I have lying around and running it without one to see if that’s any different, Thanks for the input! Which model you running it with?

The problem only exists on some early 2203/4 amps. See below.

Okay thanks for the input! That’s good to know, I was hoping the Handwired reissue would have kept the updated shielding like stated there but wasn’t sure. Sounds like it may be a preamp tube getting noisy then.

Double check the Mesa too. A lot of attenuators if you get very close with a high gain, high volume amp you can get a squeal.
Not a fault, just nature of the beast.

If anyone's online here. Could I ask a favor? Can someone share a picture and explain how they are attaching grounding wire.

Pretend I am as dumb as I look. For 1987x or 1959hw. You can attach to the capacitor on the metal thing with screw. Idk technical terms. There is a ring around power tube. And I think I saw something about transformer but im not gonna mess arpund unless I get crystal clear Instructions.

I had this installed perfectly on 1987x. Then I tried hot mod v2 Evo on my dual rectifier non multiwatt no joy. I switched it back to plexi but fucked something up, tubes were lava red.

I want and have put in my jcm 800 reissue. I attached to screw of capacitor. But I'm not convinced best location or ive done best job. It sounded so much better on plexi. And I think im getting ever so slight oscillation or squeal now. It reminds me of ps100 squealing at me (having bright switch all the way up and alot of presence)

Anyways hoping someone can help with simple grounding.

I put it in V2 of my JCM 800 and the Plexi, I grounded it on this chassis screw here. Hope this helps!
