Hey all...I have been a member since the board first opened (in addition to the HCAF boards). I am normally a very private person and I certainly keep my personal life off the internet but I am going through some very trying personal experiences. I don't want to get into details but I am finding as I go through them music is very therapeutic. It helps me face certain feelings and address difficult decisions. I have found a lot of solace in Steven Wilson's music. Even Opeth's Damnation is providing me with some peace. Addressing melancholic and sad topics/feelings through music helps me realize and embrace the happy emotions. Here is an example of a piece that is helping. It may seem silly but I feel like these lyrics speak to me directly and the melody seems to hit me where I need it:

Do any of you have suggestions of music that I can sink into? My family deserves the best version of me and I am finding this is helping me. I am sorry I am posting this if it isn't the right spot or inappropriate. Overall I am strong but I just don't have many people to turn to. Some of you I have known for a long time and consider friends. No matter what I respect the board and its members. I promise going forward I will post appropriate threads and my normal videos. I don't post this to alarm or cause worry...I am just looking for more music suggestions that could possibly help. Thanks all!

Hope you are ok Chad. I'm not sure if you have it or not, can't remember, but I'd be happy to send you a download of my CD...let me know.

I'd recommend listening to the Stones' Exile on Main Street. Not for the lyrical content as much as the inspiration of hearing a great band at their absolute peak making incredible music that defies genre. Always lifts me up!

On another note - whatever you're going through, know that it will get better, however, If you ever need to talk, you know how to reach me, brother...

Steve

Along the lines of opeth try listening to the band Katatonia, the first few albums are black metal, but newer stuff from late 90's on is in the same field as opeth. Hope things get better from here on for you!

waaaaaaaaaaaaay off the beaten path. John Hiatt: Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns. So, so good. Soulful music. Hope you feel better soon.

There are people on this forum dealing with all types of issues and much respect for you putting your emotions out there man. We all have something at any given time we are dealing with and could be anything from health issues to family issues or something else. This is the right place for you to post this because although we all might not know each other personally, we have a common bond in guitar playing and music and that is important.

I hope things get better for you man. As far as music goes, I always go the complete opposite when I'm having a hard time. I like listening to heavy stuff or 80s metal always makes me happy! :)

First of all, sorry to hear this. But, you will get through it....

About 3 years ago I lost my mother, and 6 months later my dad. Then, not long after my 7 yr relationship ended. Tough time for me.
I started digging up old CDs that I hadn't listened to in years...re-discovered how great some of that stuff is, and significant in my life.
Maybe get in touch again with some artists you've maybe put off for years? That seemed to help me.

Good luck!

In no particular order i find these songs to be uplifting for me....

Baroness - If i have to wake up (would you stop the rain)
Beta band - dry the rain
Type o negative - love you to death
Srv - little wing
Beatles - a day in the life
Pantera - shedding skin
Qotsa - in the fade
Clapton - running on faith (unplugged)
Stones - wild horses
Neil young - after the gold rush
Fear factory - resurrection
Wilco - jesus etc.
Mastodon - crack the skye
Audioslave - number 1 zero
Santo and johnny - sleepwalk

There's a lot out there. And it happens to all of us, and since I've been dealing with some very tough times myself I can always go back and listen to some Savatage and it works good for me, I also listen to AIC and Alter Bridge. It does get better.

This is gonna be way into left field for you man, but during tough times, I turn to Brian Wilson's side B beach boys stuff. I'm talking the material that's not about cars and surfboards, but life and getting thru tough times. All the amazing harmonies are there and the songwriting is nothing short of amazing. If this is a total U-turn from you normal listening pleasures, I encourage you even more to give it a try. Pet Sounds, sunflower/surfs up, and especially the over 100 songs on 'Good Vibrations' 30 years of The Beach Boys has demos and studio outtakes that just blow me away every time.
Whatever it is you choose, you'll get thru this and come out the other side much better than before for going thru it. Hang in there my friend.

Devin Townsend Project. Always amazing stuff! Heavy melodic....quirky at times but really great to listen to.

Thought about this a bit, gibson, and came up with this whilst AFK:

Wes Montgomery's "Day in the Life".

Obviously Beatles covers, but seriously-done-over.
Awesome production.
Sublime string arrangements.
Fantastic soundscapes - 3D-sounding.
Tasty, melodic guitar (obviously!).
Dreamy, thought-and-imagination-provoking.

Let me know what you think if you're able to take a listen.

I am sorry you are going through some trying times Chad, I hope that you find whatever you determine to be a good outcome.

DLR Damn Good
Bruce Horsby River runs low
Don Hendley Sunset Grill
Patti Smyth No Mistakes
Luke Bryan Hunting Fishing Loving Everyday Day...(My theme song every day I pull out of port in the boat)

Those will do for now.

I wish you Fair winds, following seas, and tight lines bro.

Scotty
