Music During Difficult Times...Suggestions

Music is such a personal thing that it's hard to know if a particular song or band will inspire others the way that it does you. Having said that, RUSH 2112 (the entire album) is still a "go to" when I want to focus on nothing but music and my thoughts.

P.S. Hope whatever you are going through passes quickly

I don't know what style of music you like but I have found a lot of positive and affirming results from a couple of metalcore bands. Check out Hatebreed, the albums 'Perseverance' and 'The Rise of Brutality' in particular. Killswitch Engage, 'Alive, Or Just Breathing' and 'The End Of Heartache'. And as mentioned above Times Of Grace, 'The Hymn Of A Broken Man'.
Hope it gets better for you.

Kings X's Gretchen Goes To Nebraska, the whole CD, especially Over My Head.

King's X's music (especially the lyrics) helped me get through some dark times.

Alter Bridge's first record helped me get through some very difficult times. I highly recommend it.

First and second (maybe more so on the second) are very inspirational albums, IMO. Third album is said to be a "concept album," however, I've not dug into it for continuity; that said: it's very easy to get absorbed in III and it's a long album. I've yet to do this, however - when I have the time and am able to do so, I'd love to listen to all four albums front to back, straight through.

Now...I'm gonna do this here maybe to my peril: if I really want to chill, I jump inside some good headphones and crank Norah Jones, especially her first album. Just the airiness of her voice takes me away, however, the production and performances are awesome, in my book. I digress...

Hoping all the best for you through your difficulty and this musical medication - which is really a great way to heal a lot of things. :)

i have gone also to very hard times the couple last months and the music of Breaking Benjamin, especially the albums Phobia and Dark Before Dawn hit me very deep. I dont care for the lyrics cause im only interested in music and english is not my mother language.

My favourites were also:
Chris Cornell - Higher Truth
Volbeat - Seal The Deal & Lets Boogie
The Cult - Hidden City
Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare and The Stage

But i give you a very good advice: Dont look to far, just remember what you were listening when you were young and happy (lets say in your teens). Go back in time and listen to these Playlists at Spotify. You will be amazed what a great impact it has on your mood. You will hear some songs you almost forgot and these are looking for.

Tremendously insightful and perfect advice. Simplicity often escapes, however, born_hard captured it right here.

Sorry to hear dude. You always post great clips.

When in doubt, Bob Marley for me! Exodus is my #1 desert island disc, so that's my first go to, although it's not exactly guitar focused...also, I find any songs you recorded while jamming out with friends help if you have them, because it reminds you of the fun you had while recording them!

Good luck!!

My father died 10/2/16, one of my best friends died 10/20/16, and my grandma died 1/19/17... as a result I've been down in a hole for quite some time. These two instrumental albums, for me, bring about some sense of peace. Can't really explain it and that's what's wonderful about music.

Type o negative is my go to band when i'm feeling down. Also listening to Ray Gillan (badlands) singing "in a dream"

The Scream - mother father son always changes any mood I am in (sometimes not always from bad to good either but it always helps when I need a mindset change)

good luck man. No hill is to tall to climb

Chad,
. I have two flavors of recommendations here. For when I'm down, I love Zakk Wyldes original Book of Shadows - to include the second disk of b sides. That got me through a great many long nights on deployment, as well as his Pride and Glory album, also with the b sides. On the other hand, nothing hits the right spot for me as well as Buckethead's Electric Tears, particularly Padmasana and the Way to Heaven. The Buckethead stuff is all instrumental though, so try at your peril. Sorry for whatever is ailing you, may it be onward and upward for you.

Some great suggestions said in this thread. I agree with Type o Negative. October Rust is a fantastic one. Zakk Wylde Book of Shadows is also an awesome choice. Old Black Sabbath makes me feel good. The 1st 4 albums.

Hope you get through whatever it is that's causing this bro. :)

I'd recommend listening to the Stones' Exile on Main Street.

What an amazing call. That album, sheer masterpiece.

I was going to suggest some Gabriel era Genesis - or early early early Collins era Genesis. Some amazing tenderness and artistry in the lyrical content and musical stylings of this band during that era.

Old Floyd is also a go to.

Be well My Brother :salute:

Hope everything works out for you and dooredge. Wish you the best. I will say that this past year has been the worst of my life and it sucks, but we will get through.

There were many for me, but here are a few that helped me. Not all metal/rock:
- Volbeat - Gardens Tale
- Merl Haggard - The Way I Am
- Yngwie Malmsteen - Crying
- Antimatter - Mr White
- Little River Band - Lady
- Toad the Wet Sprocket - Fall Down

Black Country Communion's "The Revolution in Me" (it's mind over matter...)
California Breed's "All Falls Down"
Europe's "The Beast"
John Norum's "Let It Shine"
Rob Lamothe's "The Train Song" (maybe not uplifting...)
