I have not been on too much the past week as my father was in Hospice, his body after living with heart issues since 1967 at last gave away. I am at peace with his passing, I knew for years this was coming but yes it still hurts. I have nobody to call after work now to yell about politics and sports, his mind was still very strong till the end and he was a great debater. Over the past 5-6 years his endurance was suffering and would get winded very easily, his quality of life was not the greatest but still had fun with the grandkids in his own way. He loved the fact that my son was as much a spaz as I was back when I was a kid, always said you got what you have coming
Went to the Hospice wing today with a large basket of fruit for the families that are there now going through what I did, it does not sound like much but to have something to munch on while watching a loved one is slipping away helps. For someone that is not comfortable with death the Hospice floor is not kind, every room has someone saying his final peace with his family, wife's getting final instructions on how the portfolio works and sons being told to watch mom.
The final day he told me that he was not afraid and that he was leaving with mom in good shape and that he felt he had done well with me, after that he told me that the Rolex was now mine to hold until I was ready to pass it to my son....I guess that is now the family male legacy which is fine with me.
RIP Dad, you did it right.
