Man, Yngwie is hit or miss these days but if I could cop some Yngwie it would be this feel, skill and tone. He is killing it in the video IMO:

Ha.......Most guys not in the know think that is what Yngwie has in regards to the blues which is not the case. Yngwie is talking about the feel and progression but there is no real blues about that piece.

Man his hand hand is just so calm.

You know, over the past couple of years I've really grown to love Yngwie's tones and old Uli Jon Roth tones. That single coil in to a high gain amp is SO clear but still ballsy. Me thinks I may be shifting away from humbuckers soon here.

Cool vid Brad, thanks for sharing.

Me too hense now owning a Plexi and the Yngwie clone just went in today for a pro set-up

Not sure in this particular video - but just to give you a heads up Yngwie uses "stacked" single coils which from my understanding are in essence really just a humbucker - stack on top of each other to eliminate hum instead of side by side. I recorded part of my last CD on a strat that used DiMarzio Virtual Vintage pick ups and they are great, hum canceling and really keep the strat tone, I believe Yngwies are something similar to this.

I respectfully disagree, the HS-3 does have a great single coil sound, without a DOD 250 or a YJM 308. The YJM Strats are very Hendrixy sounding. Sure it is stacked, noise cancelling, ect.
But it is a single coil sound...

I said it had a great strat sound - but I was just letting people know it's not a normal single coil if they go for that tone - it's got a slightly different property to it, plus all the added benefits of a humbucker. If someone tries to go for his tone with a normal US strat they might be a bit upset haha, hum out the ass.

Yeah I've been checking out your posts about it. Hope it works out really well for you.

It's been really strange, I picked up a little Mexi Strat a while back and really started messing with the single coils in to some serious high gain and have really liked it. I'm currently running in to a Dano Fish & Chips EQ then to a Boogie Quad & Studio/XT Pro/2:90 rack and have been more and more impressed with the Strat through this rig every day. I can use the Dano and the Tone Knobs to mimic aspects of a humbucker but there's always this great level of definition and articulation to the tone. I'm finding it easier (and honestly preferable) to mimic humbuckers using single coils than trying to make humbuckers clearer and tighter like single coils.

My next step is to get a few different "high end" single/stacked coil pickups and see what they have to offer.

you should check out his version of "Blitzkrieg" from the same video session...that, alongside with the live concert doing the classical album in its entirety with Japan Filharmonica is him bringing his absolute A-game...just awesome.

Great clip, he changes pickups about 50 times! I am so far behind the power curve, could not make that many pickups changes without breaking finger bones.

Remember that in the early years there were no HS-3's and Yngwie used the FS series from Dimarzio. This would be around the time he played with steeler and alcatraz. My understanding is that the first album with blackstar on it was the older pickups. For my money that album had the cleanest tones on it and yes in the old interviews he mentioned that the noise was always bad and that most people couldn't play his rig without sounding like crap. When he switched to the HS-3's I think you can tell because the sound is a little bit hotter and thicker although still very single coil like to me. Just my two cents.

yngwie switched to HS-3's starting on the Alcatrazz record ( mid -late 83') but you're right the steeler record was fs-1's and he actually potted them with wax and extra shielding cause they're extremely noisy especially with the DOD boost. I actually dug the FS-1's cause they had a darker sound to them. HS-3's are WAY less hotter than FS-1's, even less output than a normal single coil..but had a warmer/smoother sound.
