I'd still take Axl trying to push out the notes. He had his own thing going on at least. He screeched vs singing through his nose with that awful vibrato. Axl does suck too though don't get me wrong! I think the issue among the main stream now is that there are less guys who can sing. Back in the 80's there were a ton of solid singers in hair bands. Now, of what gets played on the radio, you've got emo punksters, people singing like Nickleback, or people not singing in a rock style. When you have a few that do, they get air time. This is the case here. Slash could have found someone better but maybe he would not have been able to find a professional who shows up day after day and works. He's probably had his fill of junkies (Snakepit singer, Wheland etc..) and didn't want to deal with it anymore.
no.
what gets played on the radio is pure marketability.
looks/image first
talent a far second
musicianship and performance talent a far 3rd
i'd guess that every "classic" rock star band pre 1990 wouldnt even get a look by labels these days.
they dont want talent, they want carrie underwood, taylor swift, aimee lee, myles kennedy, bieber, etc etc etc, and they want them to sing the tried and true clear channel formatted song stylings. or, some rehashed version of a band that was successful in the past, but only for profit margin...not to please a listener in ANY manner.
The only thing i would disagree with here is that all the artists you mentioned should be thrown under the bus. I have no problem recognizing talent.. Carrie Underwoord has got a pretty decent voice, a lot of the pop artists doo. pink has a rippin voice for example. unfortunately they choose to market the image and not just the voice.
everytime i've heard her live, she's out of key...without fail. though i will say, it was all on tv...but, there were other artists that had no pitch issues that were on before her and after. she stinks.
i agree about pink...im sure she has off nights, but i've seen her live, on tv, etc, sing after and before other talented singers, and she holds up. her voice to me when she sustains a note is like a revving engine, very powerful and full sounding.
i dont care for super pitchy singers live.
and while i will agree about myles in AB, and hell, a lot of people here seem to love him cause he's a hell of a dude and a good guitarist....his higher ranging singing bothers my ears, sort of like aimee lee....
but, i also didn't grow up listening to sub par/uber marketed image based music of the past 20 years. i grew up listening to music where people could actually sing without accutune and autotune live and in studio, most of that music being 50's/60's oldies that my parents liked, and when i was old enough to have my own tastes, those standards transferred, and still hold up to this day.
i agree about subjectivity, there's also a baseline in which things like singers and guitar tone should be regarded in my mind. myles might be a great guy, and a rippping guitarist in some people's eyes, living the dream, etc etc etc, but rarely does he hit the baseline vocally for me. my .02
good on him for his success though! i understand he's a great dude to deal with in person and extremely kind to fans. that shit matters too, more often than not, than ones singing capabilities in a lot of people's eyes.
