I was in Buffalo the other day picking up some Random pieces of gear from a few different people. I bought a Peavey Delta Blues and LP Standard off a guy I'd never met before. He told me about a friend who sells vintage amps and had a 77 JMP combo amp for sale.

Gave me his contact info, I hit the guy up and he just so happened to be available. I went and looked at it, played through it a few minutes and decided to go home with it.

I got a good price, not a screaming deal, but enough that I could resell or trade up in my favor if I wanted to. BUT

Now that I have it and hear it, part of me really wants to grab a Mojotone JMP era correct headshell, and have someone make me a custom 212 cabinet for the Blackbacks. This thing sounds incredible, and is suuuuuuper clean, the Chassis especially!

I want to have custom items made so I do not have to modify the original combo housing in any way, as this one is clean to enough to keep original.

I have been looking at Stoneage for years....maybe time to pull the trigger? Also considering a Mojotone Twin Canyon 212, as they seem really interesting with the oversized dims and front port for increased yet tight bass response.

What you guys think?

Congrats! They are great amps...I had a Canadian 82 2104.....the Canada and North Eu JMPs lasted into the mid 80s with JMP styling unlike the rest of the world changing in 81. Easy to convert, and worth more as a head.

Whether it's clean or not, keeping it original should be your first priority. Only a douche would modify a vintage Marshall amplifier.

Thanks man! Still not sure I want to keep it just yet. I'm wondering if I just purchased a separate headshell if I could get my money back when reselling if I decide not to keep it? I have a 78 JMP 2203 and an 85 2204 that both sound incredible, so keeping this seems a tad redundant.

You should be able to, no problem. Everyone wants a head anyway...if you bought the combo for 1500 for example, I'd bet you'd get 2K for it in a head shell in today's market.

Any idea what the blackback speakers are worth?

Just to clarify-are you suggesting buying a headshell and mounting the chassis in it is somehow a mod?

My guess is 2-300 apiece. Not my favorite but there are a ton who love them. I liked the earlier Cream back GBs better, and Pulsonic even better still.

My buddy is making me a headshell for my '79 2104. Much easier to sell that way. Such killer amps though, grats on the score!

What... 2-300 a piece? 4 Years ago I sold a complete cab from 1978 with 4 of them for 375 Euro.

These days, with everything inflated even more they might even go for more...it's pretty insane out there with vintage gear prices.

Thanks guys. What are your thoughts on the Mojotone Jmp headshells? They seem accurate and are actually in stock right now.

As far as cabs, I'd love to do a stone age cab but God damn are they pricey! Lol

I bought what I think is the same amp you have from a friend of mine a few years ago. Its a 77 jmp 2x12 combo, but it was a mail order only deal.
He sold off the combo cab with the speakers and put the chassis in a Mojotone headshell, which is what I have now. Fits well and looks pretty good too!
