Engl Fireball 100.
Wanted one for long time and one miraculously came up locally so I snagged it for a nice price.
So fun to play.
Lots of gain, lots of compression, lot's of articulation, lot's of lows, lot's of high, lot's of mids, lot's of volume. Everything I want in a metal amp.

Hope my pics are showing, RT has been really bad lately with my attachments. Simply refresh this page and they should appear if you can't see them at first. Ghost in the machine I guess.

A little review;

The Clean channel is full, lively and really just plain gorgeous sounding for a twisted metal beast of an amp. Chimey, warm, bell like, all that bullshit clean tone rhetoric. It's there.

The Lead channel is a dream to play. It has everything. Smooth playability, yet insanely aggressive sounding. Tonnes of midrange, an abundance of cutting highend, and probably the most and thickest sounding lowend I've ever encountered. All never too much or too little. Just a fantastic eq sweep on this amp.

The gain is all usable. Lower it for mid gain crunch, half it for thrash riffing, or even max it for blistering, lava like modern metal from ANY genre. It NEVER gets unruly, messy or bogged down. It just gets warmer, juicer and more evil at every notch increment. It's not sterile like I was afraid it would sound either. It's very warm and natural sounding. Unlike the FB60 I experienced years ago.

Add in the on board adjustable noise gate, and this amp is at the top of the heap. Everything I want in a no nonsense metal machine, with none of the unnecessary stuff I don't want or need. Very tight, very focused and HUGE sounding. So fun to play.

It is compressed, but that's the nature of the beast. It's a modern ultra high gain amp. I like that though. It's really fun to play.
But the saturated gain and compression dries up when the gain is backed off and more picking dynamics can be had that way if you want it. Although I can lightly pick with a high gain setting and get this really cool soft edgy gain sound that sounds wicked.

As you turn this amp up is has more mids right across the spectrum. High mids, mid mids & low mids. Paired with a quad of V30's and the mid shift button engaged, look out.

Compared to my other amps, it has more low end for sure, and has very tight gain. The JSX's gain is the only amp that comes close to the level of gain, articulation and tightness.
The FB has a certain growl when you riff power chords and open chug that other amps just don't have. It really does sound evil. It's a real winner for me because it does things my other amps don't do and it can't do things that my other amps can.
Plus, I hate pedals and all I need with this amp is a tuner, Which I've been leaving out of the chain anyways and plugging in seperately when necessary. The built in gate is really nice. Not just a noise/hum reducer like the JSX. It has actual feedback and noise gating capability.
It's just plug in and hold on tight.

I'm playing it through a mix of V30's and V12 Legends along with some WGS Retro and Veteran 30's. All sounding great.

Congrats!!
I had one when they 1st came out. Its a KILLER amp isnt it?

Yeah I'm having a blast with it man! It's like what you really want a metal amp to sound like. This thing does what other players try to get their amp to do with pedals likes boosts, eqs, and noise gates. None of those things are needed here.

^ that's how I felt about the fireball, and especially, moreso, the Powerball II. you stereo it with the VHT yet?

I did, for a few hours yesterday afternoon.

The FB is smoother and has more lowend. The high compression and gain saturation is a trademark tone of the FB. The Pittbull lacks those features, but it's not a bad thing.
The Pittbull is a bit sluggish compared to the FB, but you just need to focus on you attack more, since the FB is sooo easy to play.
The Pittbull sounds a little boxy in the mids next to the smoothness FB. But that is just more of the Pittbulls raw crunch busting out.
I keep using the word smooth, but don't let that convince you that the FB sounds soft or gentle in any way. The highs scream and the gain growl, purrs and is just simply sounds PISSED OFF.
The lowend is a big difference freq wise. I had to put Pittbulls depth and bass dial at full to match the FB's bass which was at half. Without the FB's bass boost on....
Right now I prefer the FB, but I'm kind of going for that tight, liquid lava high gain sound lately.
Together they sounded as expected; huge, 3D and all consuming.
I didn't tailor each amps eq to mix/work together though. It was more like two high gain Titans "Duking it out" sort of thing.

The FB actually helped me sort out some issues I was having with the VHT.
The Pittbull was sounding flat and cold and the highs were chirpy and kinda annoying.
I yanked a GT12AX7 I had in V1 and put a JJEC83S in, so two of those are in V1 & V2 now. The highs got warmer and calmed a bit. More gain saturation too.
I also replaced a Mesa Russian tube in the V5 spot, which was the flat sound culprit. I put an original old VHT labeled tube in there and the problem was fixed.

Any chance foro some clips? From your description the fb100 sounds like a big upgrade over the fb60 that I used to have and didn't get along with.

I tried capturing the sound of the amp with my Samsung digital video camera, but I wasn't completely satisfied. I'll give it another go when time allows though.
It's a BIG leap over the FB60, by the way.
To me, the 60 sounded narrow, scooped and limited overall. It just couldn't breathe and didn't have even half the amount of midrange cut as the 100 does. The 100 is warmer too, round and thick while still extremely tight.

Great review!

I wrote off the Fireball after playing the 60 back in the day. Glad to hear the 100 is better. I'll have to give one a try.

Congrats, man. Had one of these pretty early on when they came out. Very cool amp. I agree with everything you said in your review.

All this Fireball 100 talk is wanting me to check another one out.

HNAD!!! Congrats, Hell your description/review made me want to go buy one

try a 12AT7/ECC81 in V6 or the second preamp tube position from the input jack, I ran mine like this with a OD pedal it really opens up the amp

Oddly, I have not had any urge to swap any tubes in this amp.
Strange, since I always have a mixed cocktail of preamp tubes in all my amps. For what I doing with the amp, I really don't need any changes right now. This is just a no pedals/no nonsense plug in a play amp.
I find simply turning the amp up to ear splitting volumes "opens it up" just fine. It just gets wider, and clearer with more midrange while staying tight and punchy.
