THanks a TON to Bronco for hooking me up with this JSX in absolute perfect condition!!! Ill try to make some clips tomorrow night. I gotta try it through my buzzbomb as well. Ive decided I need to get a different cab for it too. I also have some 6l6 tubes coming in to try in it. Very stoked about getting this amp. Sounds killer!!!

I have a feeling you are going to ultimately end up with a 5150, your clips with that are great.
Hnad nonetheless!

HNAD! but goddamn, I played in a band with a guy that had one. I myself did not like it. I have heard that KT77's are the way to go.

Great amp IMO...I enjoyed mine thorougly when I owned it and have always wanted to own another. For a high gain head...it's great at low volume bedroom playing. And I got some great live tones as well. I got rid of mine when I went through my last GAS phase. I always liked having two different amps...so at the time I had the Quick Rod and the JSX...favored the JSX. Sold the QR for the Marshall JVM...which is my main amp. Bought a Powerball and liked the JSX & JVM better. Sold the Powerball and bought the SigX...liked the JVM better. Bought another JVM for dirt cheap and since I was touring alot I wanted a direct replacement thus I sold the JSX. But yeah I miss it. Has gotten a bad rap from some but loaded with 6L6's, I always dialed in great tone to my ears. IMO the best amp Peavey has ever made...and I played 5150's for 10 years straight at one time. I always felt the JSX just had more depth than the 5150. One thing though...I much preferred 6L6's in that amp...just opened it up, alot more beef/low end. I also preferred a combo of EH and Chinese C9's in the pre-amp. Oddly I'm not a huge fan of the EH's in any other amp. And I ran my channel volumes high as well...felt that helped fatten the amp up in a live situation. Congrats.

I liked the amp with EL34, but with KT77 it was awesome (Ultra channel especialy, didnt play the other ones ) :rawk:

A note about using the effects loop send and return. keep them all the way up. turning them down severely neuters the amps tone.

HNAD!

Thanks for all the tips guys!! Ive had a lot of experience with these in the past, but never owned one. As soon as I took it out of the box, I turned the FX loop all the way up. Gives a volume boost when you engage it this way too. I have a decimator g-string on the way. This amp is as noisy as my 6505. I also already have 6l6 tubes on the way. Ive never really been a fan of el34s. I put chinese silver dragons in there, but Im gonna try the EHs that came in the pre as well. I was, at first, running it through my converted 6505 212 cab, but it was too midrangey and farty through it. Its sounding much better through the buzzbomb. I imagine that the 6l6s will make it sound even better too. I might be looking for a different cab for it soon. Maybe another buzzbomb, maybe a 412, Im not really sure yet. Ive always really liked this amp. Playing it next to the 6505, I like the 6505 more, so I wouldnt be surprised if I sold it to fund a 5150 or 6505 in a few months, but I definitely love the tone, and I definitely want to spend a couple months with it. I think this might work better in my band than the 6505 because of the versatility and the clean. It doesnt sound nearly as aggressive as my 6505 through my cabs, but I think a 412 would really add something to the tone.

What speakers do you find work well with this amp?

Overall, Im very happy, and I got a very good deal on this amp. Ive been wanting one for soooo long, and its nice to finally have one. My ex was saying she cant believe I finally got a JSX (cuz I was planning on buying one around the time we started dating, but I ended up having to spend that money on my car instead, and that was 3.5 years ago). Im looking forward to trying different tubes and maybe some different speakers and cabs.

Congrats, I've owned mine for 5 years now and have never felt the urge to sell it. I've heard some people dial them in to sound really bad, so these amps can easily get a bad rap.
I've done lots of tube combinations over the years and find my current selection to be best.
V1 - JJ ECC83S
V2 - JJ ECC83S
V2 - Sovtek 12AX7
V4 - EH Gold Pin
Svetlana EL34's

I like the aggressive sound of the EL34's and actually find myself dialing back the bass and resonance. So it's definitely not lacking lowend. I also like that this amp requires no boost, just straight in, tight and responsive high gain metal at all volume levels. I also run the master volume high at about 8/10 and keep the channel volumes lower at 4/10. I find this makes the amp sound more open and bigger and clearer, by pushing the power section. This thing has so much gain that I don't need the preamp to be slammed with any extra volume and output. I also keep the Fat switch off on the ultra channel to keep the tone raw and more natural sounding. The ultra channel is fairly compressed sounding, so I don't like the smooth roundness the Fat switch adds to that channel. I do like the Fat switch on on the crunch channel though.
I run the ultra channel mids at 4/10, mainly because I play through V30's. I like the sound of the V30's mids better than the amps, so it blalances nicely and gives me a super tight and thick metal rhythm tone. Enjoy!

Cool. thanks man. Im looking forward to spending time with this thing and playing with settings. I like the openness of the crunch channel, and I can see myself using that as the main channel, but Im not sure itll have enough gain for me on that channel. The ultra channel definitely has enough gain, but Its much more compressed than my 6505, so Ill have to play with it to see if I can get it to sound a little bit less so. I think my cab choice will help with that significantly as well. I really need to get a different cab for it. Really leaning toward a vader 412...

Congrats, dude!

Peavey makes some killer gear.

Thanks man!! Totally agree. Bullet proof gear at a great price for the working musician!! Cant wait to get this thing out to practice and shows. I definitely need to get a real cab for it first though haha.

One thing for sure is that the JSX is VERY sensitive to speaker, cab, tube and pickup choices. One wrong or bad choice can really hold the amp back.
For the crunch channel, you can get a really good thrash metal tone by setting the gain to 10 and treble to 8. mids and bass at about 6. Lots of gain and tone there.

Never thought to try upping the treble over the bass and mids, but Ill sure give that a shot. I definitely will be swapping tubes around the next few weeks too and seeing what different pre and power tubes can do for me. Definitely will be buying a real cab for it within the next month or so, I think.

The whole Ultra Series is.
My RockMaster Pre sounded pretty good with EL34s, but it absolutely SLAYED through 6550s.

Just saw an ultra plus 120 with matching cab on CL here for 500 bucks...

Great amp, I gigged one for about 6 months. Kinda had a 'generic' tonal thing that I couldn't put my finger on, but it was a fun amp.

I've always been curious about this amp. The one time I plugged into one was at GC. I turned it on and got nothing. It didn't work.

So I plugged a LP into the Diezel VH4 sitting next to it and played for a good half an hour.

Ive done that at GC before too. I cant even imagine how many amps people turn on with no load connected at GC, and then BAMMO...there goes the OT...

I think for the most part they blow a fuse.
