I have been haunting the Ultra Plus for so long, but it's not easy to find one in Athens Greece, so I bought this one instead for 350 euros. First impressions... Well, IT SLAYS! It sure aint as articulate as the mesa boogie mark series, but this thing has tons of gains! I think I am in love with the crunch channel! I haven't tried it yet through my cab as I only had little free time to play but I did manage to record sth quick using my suhr reactive load + two notes wall of sound. The 1st clip is the mark iv vs the triple xxx - crunch channel with gain at 3 or sth!
The second clip is 2 guitars using some different settings.

So I hear! Mine came with Ruby KT88. Tomorrow morning Im gonna experiment with some preamp tubes! I ve read that maybe a 12at7 would suit the v1 perfectly as it will tame it a bit. What's yourt thought?

Yeah man, the Peavey XXX is a killer amp. Honestly, I’d take the XXX over the Ultra Plus any day. Not that the Ultra is a really cool amp too, but I prefer the XXX. I really dig it with EL34’s.

Very, very underrated amp. I always hated the redneck looks of the original so I wrote it off. Once I spent some time with it...it delivers the goods.

I preferred a 5751 in V2.

Peavey shot themselves in the foot over the faceplate of the amp. As often happens with their products where they just fail on the aesthetics. Then again, that was Lynch's design and would have worked better had they launched it as his signature head. They should have gone more the Ultra Plus / 5150 style look for that. It's a great amp. Just never understood some of Hartley's aesthetic idea's, he hated the silver face plate of the 5150 stating he thought silver face plates looked cheap. The 5150 is IMO arguably one of the best looking amps ever put out. I think Hartley has been his own worst enemy at times.

Agreed. I mean I know George Lynch was a pretty popular guitarist in the 80's but when they released the XXX...was he popular enough that they went with his aesthetic vision? Not dogging him but man, the amp is a great sounding amp...I just have a feeling if they would have went with a more streamlined look like you are saying, the sky could have been the limit. Just look at how many people modded their headshells.

It is a blast from the past. Looks exactly like my old one. Fucking brutal amp, I got it for 200 trumps. I really could have stuck with it if I wasn't such a snobbish boutique amp guy. That damned faceplate really was an issue for me, lol.

I got one cheap as well last month. Still has original tubes sound phenomenal. Afraid to mess with it as I had issues with my first early model with the E34L screen resistor problems. It sounded amazing back then. This is the lightning logo one now and seems solid as hell. Anyway with my Fishman Fluence loaded guitars I feel like it sounds great the way it is love these amps \m/

Congrats man! I have one, and even though I rarely use it these days I'll never get rid of it.

Man prices used on these are all over the place!!
From $650 to $1100!

Looks like the JSX is the same.

Think I liked the JSX little more but did own the XXX
And it was great.

I feel so damn lucky that I got mine for $200 last year from facebook marketplace. I will probably never get rid of it or my 5150 head.

Great fun amps! They are very good at low volumes.

I am not sure if the looks were different if it would be more popular. The 3120 was basically the same amp with different looks, and it is not super popular either.

Congrats on the XXX! I like the ultimate metal clip the best as usual, they always sound so much better than the you toobz.

People sleep on the XXX. A stupid killer amp for typically very low prices. It's been on my "to-buy" list for years now but it never lines up right. I'm a big Exodus fan and it's the one amp they used I don't have yet. If I find another screaming deal on one I gotta pull the trigger.

Thx a lot guyz!! It's a sleeper of an amp! I mean listen to the gain the crunch channel has..!

Not the best type of recording but you get the idea..! Gain at 3.5
