I’ve spent a LOT of time with that amp. My buddy bought his after hearing my XXL back around 2005. Both those amps ended up in my house for the last 5 years or so and his XXX became my main recording amp before I went all AxeFX.

My only gripe was the clean channel, as it just sounded very flat and the EQ didn’t seem to do much. It was just a louder version of the XXL (which is just the solid state version of an XXX, with reverb). There were times where I wanted a warmer sound, maybe bluesier, but that’s not exactly what the amp was designed or built for, so fair enough.

My favorite tones were usually held in the 2nd channel with the gain around 5.5-6. My 2x12 is loaded with WGS Retro 30’s and that amp worked REALLY fucking well with those speakers. It’s an old Line 6 2x12 that had some cheap FRFR speakers in them designed to work with their old Flextone amps. The dolt who sold it to me off EBay back in the day told me it had V30’s in it and I, the dolt who bought it, didn’t figure out how to take the grille off until I had it for 13 fuckin’ years. When I switched those speakers out I was pretty blown away by how alive the amp came....for the obvious reasons.

To be honest I rarely set the gain more than 11 o clock. I usually have it at 9 and it feels so good! The amp records excellent! For the price I paid it's a hell of an amp! I agree with you on the clean channel but I think the 90% of the people who get this is for the high gain stuff.

I think the XXX clean is better than people give it credit for. I use settings similar to yours, treble and mids at 9 oclock or lower, and then bass almost cranked. It makes for a decent 80's style clean. Add some Chorus and Reverb, and it sounds pretty good.

Perfect! I'm sure you will dig it! Also the peavey ultra plus is a real sleeper too! Less gain but more organic sounding! Let me know how u like it through the 2x12! These amps can be really picky when it comes to speakers
