So after about 18 months with the EVH 5150 III 100w i fancied a change to something simpler and Marshall voiced so i did a trade for a Splawn Competition 50 in a lovely chocolate brown hue.

I've only played it briefly but my initial impressions are very good, the difference in feel between this and the EVH is huge, the dynamics when picking are crazy, i can get an almost clean percussive plunk out of it with a light touch and a roaring full chord when hitting it hard all on the same setting and volume.

The multiple gear option is cool, honestly i can see myself sticking to 2nd Gear with the additional overdrive boost to get lead tones, and the built in solo boost is a godsend and removes one pedal from my board instantly.

Using it with a Matamp 2x12 with 65w Creeambacks and it just nails that Marshall tone, it even sounds good at TV volume which i really wasn't expecting. It has KT77s in it at the moment, never used them before but it sounds great.

Will put up some clips this week, but overall great first impression :D

Kick ass! Love my Splawn. Welcome to the club. Your card and t-shirt will be in the mail shortly!

Welcome to the family!! Have you tried going to OD2 in 2nd gear instead of boosting? Also, I believe the Competition is also foot-switchable between the gears just like the Quick Rod. With the knob physically in third gear the foot switch will switch between second and third gear.

Enjoy!! Clipz!!

I've had my QR since '05 as my main amp if that says anything :D

Youre right about the percussiveness and pick attack they have  ...and Scott is the nicest most helpful guy you'll ever meet

Congrats!

wow lots of Splawn love on RT!

yeah i have tried the OD1/OD2 boost function, it's very cool, i'm only running the gain at about 11 o clock and it sounds killer, i bet it slays for metal with the gain up and more volume, it's the clarity that impresses me most so far

If you want a more liquidy feel throw an MK.4.23 clean boost in front of it ;)

Congrats man, great amp! I'm still honeymooning with my quickrod, its been over a month and my other amps are starting to collect dust. Love how these things take a boost too, I'm a boost junkie, and this thing sounds great with every one I've tried so far.

Man I got my 2013 QR a few months ago and it still kicks my ass! Sounds so dang good. Love the Splawn stuff.

I like the cosmetics you chose! Very different than what you normally see. Congrats on a great amp.

Awesome! I've had a Competition for a couple months myself, I'm in love with OD2 2nd Gear.
