NBD: I Finally Have My Crowns

I snagged a 2001 Spector Euro 5 so I can try out for a new band this weekend. It was refinished in a bronze color that doesn't photo well, and has a few upgrades. The finish feels okay, and has a satin clear on it. It has Luminlay side dots that were professionally installed before the amateur refinish, and those are nice. He also put Hipshot Ultralite tuners on it. The main issue is that none of the hardware matches. He had three different knobs on it, a brass bridge, nickel tuners, and black strap buttons. Here is a photo from the listing.

I got it this afternoon and got to work. It needed a setup in a bad way. The action was high enough to shoot arrows off this thing. I tuned it up and did a quick setup, and now it plays like a Spector. I switched out the knobs for some EMG knobs I had laying around. I started putting gold hardware on it. I'm going to flip the tuners for gold ones down the road. It's playable now.

Oddly enough, this is my nineth Spector that I've owned, but the first Spector I've had with the crown inlays. My American Forte twins are both blank planks, just one fretted and one fretless. My other Euro was a NS5CRFM, and that was a blank plank fretless as well. The rest all had dots. Weird.

That's a badass looking bass dude! Congrats!! I favor 5 strings, been playing them since I was 15.

Tagging @Floyd Eye for this. Dude loves his Spector bass.

Congrats BeZo. A very awesome day for you I'm sure. And that gold bridge....

Looks like you've entered a new "phase" of your bass playing existence.

Enjoy it in good health!

It’s beautiful bro. What preamp ?

I was interested in that myself, and popped the back off as soon as I got it.

There isn't one.

It's two volumes (only one was hooked up though), a blend pot, and tone pot. I had to rearrange them to put them in the proper layout, so they match the rest. It's a blank canvas.

I'll try it for a bit and see how it sounds. I can always drop something in later. What do you suggest?

Well I’m not super familiar with a lot of the different options, especially newer ones like the Darkglass ( which is supposed to be bad ass) but the ones I’ve had experience with are the Tone Pump, not tone Pump Jr but the regular Tone Pump with the trim pot And the Haz. They’re both pretty awesome but I like the Tone Pump better.

This being 2001, it should have the EMG preamp in it stock. I had a Bartolini preamp in my old NS5CRFM Fretless and it was awesome. The EMG pre I dropped into an NS2A was kinda meh. The Forte Twins both came with the Aguilar OBP, and that's pretty good. I should try a Tone Pump. I wanna get a Flight Case from Spector anyways. This came in a gig bag and my cases are all trashed from the road. We'll see.

I gotta get the gig first.

The Tone Pump is very high output. You’ll want to turn the internal trim pot down to about 60%. It’s very mid forward and aggressive.

The Haz is bad ass too but not as aggressive though maybe a little more versatile because it’s designed so that plucking with a lighter touch is very clean but when you dig in it hits with the vintage Spector “ growl”.

My rig is the SVT 2 non pro which already is amazingly dynamic.
