NCD: '79 Marshall 4x12 w/ G12-65s!

Just scored a 1979 Marshall JMP 4x12 loaded with G12-65's! Got a great deal on it, but had to travel 300miles to pick it up..

Il report back tomorrow and post pics too, im completely fkn wiped out after that journey tonight

Awesome man!!! That sure was a freaking far drive, though! YIKES! Is that 300 miles each way? Even if it's 300 miles total, that's still far!

Hey Chris!

Yeah it was 300 Miles total.. 150 each way. Luckily me and my dad stopped at the service station on the way back, had a break and a bite to eat. It was pretty much a straight drive on the motorway too, so it was a simple route.

I tried out the cab at the sellers house, he hooked up this old vintage 60watt Carlsbro head to the cab and plugged me in with his 1960RI strat. Man it was maybe some of the best clean tone i have EVER heard! Very smooth, tons of headroom comin from the cab and the bottom end held together perfectly!

You should have grabbed the Carlsbro too. Amazing amps, excellent transformers (mix of Partridge and Drake). I've had one here last year (and made a high gain monster out of it )

Thats not the same model Carlsbro i tried last night.. this is a pic of it:

The guy wanted only a few hundred £ for it, and it has the Brymar powertubes in it and original trannys as far as i know.

Holy FUCK!! This thing weighs so damn much more than my 1960AC 4x12!

Nearly blew my back out carrying this thing up the stairs... my newer Marshall cab i can lift with ease..

Why is this thing so much heavier??

Are the speaker magnets that much heavier on 65's compared to Greenbacks? Maybe... The cabs SHOULD be constructed similarly? I don't think my '77 Marshall cab is any heavier than a newer one, but I guess I could be wrong there.

Well this one has solid metal handles on it, and also it has a much thicker wooden post inside. Also it has that wooden cross inside there which the wooden post connects to. My newer 1960AC doesnt have either of those!

Either way.. i will say this cab sounds killer either with high gain OR with pure clean tones. Its very dynamic!

Hmm in that case could it be earlier than a '79? I have the Serial code on the back panel near the input jack which reads : 41542

The tolex is like the same stuff used on the early JMP headshells, and like i mentioned before it has metal handles. Same style as your plastic ones, except theyre metal. I havent seen a metal handled Marshall cab before so i dont know if the original metal handles were different style to the plastic ones on yours?

It is obviously some sort of mongrel cab. Best case is its an early 70s cab that has had the grill and speakers changed out and corners added.

Is the back plywood? Are the corners attached with rivets? If you posted some more pictures of the handles, brace and other parts it could probably get narrowed down more.

We need psychodave, squarehead, or other Marshall guys to chime in here, but I think the metal handles only came on the real early cabs (late '60s and MAYBE early '70s?) and those wouldn't have black grill cloth. Maybe the handles were replaced? Those plastic handles have been known to break.

The '73 cab I just bought has plastic handles so they must have made the change in the early seventies.

I believe the corners are attached with rivets!

Upper left corner, that small triangular space, that is where they used to put something. When did they stop doing that? I bet it was well before '79, my '73 also has that but I seem to remember that a '76 I saw the other day did NOT have that.
