I got my hands on a beat-up EVH 5150 III cab last Monday. This is my first experience with Greenbacks. I've been using V30 flavors for several years prior. I thought it was time to try something else. Initially, I didn't like it. It sounded muddy like I had a blanket over the cab, and I got tons of feedback from my Granger LO50 (SLO clone). Dialing in more treble and/or presence just made it have a buzzy/fizzy sound.
Then I switched it to the crunch channel and I discovered how they're supposed to work. The feedback went away and the tone oozed. The low end is so thick and monstrous. It's a growl I've never gotten outta my own rig. It's very reminiscent of Mastodon. I now get what guys are trying to describe when they say Greenbacks have a "woody" tone. It's like it's more believable and less contrived... The low end from my Bogner cab with V30/K100's always sounded a little overwhelming like a hum almost. However, I still feel the GB's are a bit lacking in the upper end. It's a lot smoother now that I'm using my crunch channel, but it doesn't cut like I get with my Bogner cab. I need the low end of my EVH cab and the upper end of my Bogner.
So... I think it's time to build a wet/dry rig. I'll run my LO50 on the high gain channel into the Bogner with V30's (probably replacing the K100's since I don't need their low end) with my delay since it has a really good FX loop. Then I'm gonna get an amp that's just filthy crunchy to drive the Greenies. I might even go with Curt again to get him to build that one for me.
Or maybe I just need a speaker that's somewhere in the middle of the two. But for now, I'm feeling really Spinal Tap and in need of two amps!
