Hey guys,
I want to get a 7 string to toy with and learn a few songs that use them.

Can you guys recommend a decent 7 string? Something that isn't going to break the bank if I don't like it and something that's not so shitty that I will be fighting it to play.

I hope that makes sense. No preference on bridge.

Can't go wrong with an ibanez 1527 or even the the cheaper 7421s were plenty good.

I know this is a ‘typical response’ but you really need to go try some out, especially if you haven’t played a 7 string before, so you can see what feels right. The biggest adjustments for me were the feel of the bigger neck and the narrower string spacing that a lot of them have. I prefer Schecter’s with ultra thin necks because those felt the most natural for me.

It might be worthwhile to post a numeric budget. What "breaks the bank" for some is nothing to others. I'm a major fan of ESP LTDs but the only 7 string I own anymore is a Sterling by MusicMan JP70, and it's a great instrument for the money. I believe they are only around 400-500 brand new, so that might be worth looking into.

Any MIJ Ibanez is a great guitar. Prices are starting to creep up. My next low budget choice would be a '00-ish Diamond Series Schecter. These can be found for a couple hundred $ sometimes and are very nicely made.

Schecter and Ibanez both make great lower priced 7 strings.

I have a Schecter Omen Elite 7. Fantastic guitar.

Honestly the real questions you need to answer:
• budget
• will you use lower than B
• do you want baritone scale - 26.5” or more

I personally HATE baritone scale for leads but love it for rhythms. I ended up preferring 25.5” all around. Caveat with the Schecter Reaper 7 multi. That was pretty dope.

So my budget is 1000 and under and I will not be using it under B. I wasn't thinking of getting a Baritone 7 but I was thinking about getting a baritone 6 in the next year or so.

I've played a schecter, a Carvin, and a Jackson 7 but each time I didn't spend enough time to make an informed judgement.

I think I'm going to try to get by GC this weekend although it's not a definite that they will have anything more than 6 strings.

I basically just want to get one to learn a few songs and see if it suits me as well as take me out of my comfort zone. Thanks for the recommendations. I'm hoping I can find these(or similar) in shops locally. Just wanted to check with you guys to see if there was anything favored.

I will let you guys know how it turns out

Man the Schecter Reaper 7 was seriously pretty solid. Multiscale which was cool. Not uncomfortable at all on the B - D strings and nice at normal scale for lead playing. The stock pickups were really pretty good as well.

I would go cheap so you don't lose out on something that isn't for you.

Using a baritone 6 as a 7 would be my recommendation. I think you get more from the bass strings. the thing i like about playing "7" string is using drop a and being able to play standard by just going down a string, but playing 6 string songs on a 7 is fun using the extra bass note, but the g string needs to be tuned to f# or it fucks it up. This is why drop tuning is best of both worlds.

listen to anyone but this guy. He's never played a baritone or 7 string in his life. hes owned a 7 but i think he just hung it on the wall and used it as a mirror to apply pomade to his 'doo

If you're talking entry level pretty much anything will do. Try some at a local store if you can.

Sevens. I played six strings for years. Wandered off into 7 realm. Now 90% of my playing is on sevens. Just a word of caution ?
As for cheap Jackson makes a seven that comes in around 300 new. Yeah it’s made in China but it’s a 7. Schecter and Ibanez good choices too.
The reason I mentioned the Jackson is because one was for sale locally for 200. Has a Dimarzio EVO II. Plays just fine. Needed a setup. The pickup alone was worth 100. My beater 7. FWIW that EVO II pickup is amazing.
If you’re planning on major detuning get a multi scale.

I posted this in the other thread.. I suppose it's from china, but it looks alright. Not much info like scale length tho..

I love the pictures for the guitar. I know when I am out with my friends at a picnic, they love when I bust out my 7 string and play some sick downtuned riffs.

This lucky birthday boy got a new 7 string, too bad his hand is dematerializing through the fretboard. Also the guitar is seemingly floating in mid air. These kids are getting a lesson in physics and djent at the same time. He will never forget this birthday!
