I have a VH4 and it has worked fine, However; today I turned it on for the tubes to warm up came back about 5 to 10 mins later and went to turn the stand by switch to run. When I did that my cab made this loud pop and then there was this fizzy kind of buzzing noise. I instantly turned the stand by switch back to stand by and the noise went away. The cab I am running is a VHT 4x12 loaded with P50E's so its a 200w cab. Could I have hooked it up wrong?

Could it possibly be a tube issue? The amp had new tubes installed and was re-biased right before it was sent to me. which was in January. around the 21st I believe.

I just hope something was not fried... freaking out, I am. The voltage on the amp is set for the U.S. ( thats where I live haha )

For me, the connection to the cab is correct.

About the "pup" after running it, it could be possibly a tube issue. Have you checked your tubes fuses leds on the back of the amp?

Yeah! Everything looks fine! none of the LED's are lighting up.

but you were running the amp normally before today?

have you tried the amp after the "pup"? (sometimes those "pups" happen, but the amp keeps working normally...)

Yep It was working great yesterday! I actually tried it a second time and it did the same thing. maybe a third time? I unplugged it from the wall maybe that could help something?

could this be a problem? look at the bottom of these giant ass 6550's:

it looks as if the don't fit in all the way?

Well, those tube retainers seem to be the older ones, that suited the EL34/6L6, but not the 6550s... If you want to keep with the 6550s, I suggest you to remove them, and put the newer ones, so you can plug properly the tubes...

I don't know it that tube is properly plugged...

Peter also recommends the EL34BHTs, but here a lot of people is running the 6550s without any problems.

How do I go about getting these new tube retainers?

Thats how all the tubes are too...

I want to get me a set of some nice 6l6's what do you run?

so these old tube retainers could very well be causing a problem?

I'm really happy with the EL34BHTs, but that's a matter of tastes.. here everybody runs different tubes xD You can keep those retainers if you change your tubes to the EL34/6L6s.. the newer ones looks like these:

If I were you at this moment, I would try to change the tubes for a new set, and try again.

I hope this is all it is! I would hate for my baby to be in harms way. I hope that something like this won't cause any damage...

HOLY SHIT!!!!

No kidding you're getting some f*cked up noise... As per my previous post regarding the tube retainers - JUST REMOVE THEM!!!! Forget about getting new ones right now, just get rid of these and push those tubes FLUSH into the sockets - damn!!!!!!! That's just a MESS of crap waiting to happen.

I fucking knew it! Right when I saw that I had to snap a picture. Figured that was fucking shit up! Thank you guys! Especially you V! You help me so much so often! You are like my tone/ don't do this or you will kill your $5000.00 amp advisor.

So I removed the retainers yet it still does the same thing.. what else could it be?

As per my PM, this is it... 99% of the snap, crackle, pop is tube related - something happened to a couple tubes not getting fed their juice (due to not being effectively seated) and this can damage the tube. What you're hearing is more than likely damaged power tubes. Fortunately they're easy to buy, and easy to get. Bear in mind Poppa's latest recommendations for tubes.

Hang in there, it'll be alright.

Many times when people swap tubes multiple times or the tubes are sitting at a bad angle the pins
can stretch out the clamps in the socket and they can make a popping noise or blow fuses off standby.
Try re-tensioning the tube pins and see if the issue stops. I use a dental pick of a jewelers flat head screw driver.

Here is what they look like stretched out. Just push all 8 clamps together to make a tight fit around the tube pins.
