guys, I have a xxx combo the 40 watt 1x12 with the onboard efx
and when i turn it on it produces a smell sort of like something being burned kind of like a musty/cigarette burning/people dying type of smell.

This is my 1st tube amp, is this smell normal? Is it just the power tubes warming up or is there a problem I need to be concerned about?

Lastly, the amp, I bought it from the forums at Harmony Central from a member. He said that it has a power attenuator modded into the amp. There is an audio level knob on the back. Could that be causing the smell?

The smell is produced during the first 10 minutes of me playing through the amp.

shouldnt smell anything from tube amps.. even after 7 hours of band practice from hell. let alone the first 10 minutes.

somethings up. take it to a tech and have it checked out. sounds to me like something isnt wired right. the more you insist on playing it the more damage you could be doing.

i cant tell you more without having the amplifier in front of me or on my tech bench. best thing is, un-plug it, and get it checked out. you should have had it looked at and gone over after receiving it for safe measures, and just in case. that way you know he didnt sell you a deffective amplifier.

keep us informed dude, good luck!

yea, i will be taking it to a tech, this monday/tuesday. Will keep you guys informed. Thanks for the help.

I asked on Harmony central and it seems that you've said the same thing. A wiring issue. I hope to god its not a blown fuse.

I bought the amp with an upgraded speaker for 500 with shipping included. I don't wanna end up paying more than the price of the amp to fix it...please tell me this shouldn't happen right?

actually, you might want to hope it IS a fuse. if current is flowing where it isnt supposed to be, that will be causing more damage than you want to afford to fork out. fuses are for safety and are easy and cheap to replace. it also helps identify where the problem lies.

you wont pay more than the price of the amplifier to fix it. but if its a transformer issue where you are playing but you dont hear anything sound coming out, then a new OT/PT will set you back one pretty penny. just depends on the issue, the tech, if there is damage done, and what parts are damaged if any. it isnt under warranty so all you can do is wait.

if it were me, id be :gethim: the guy that sold it to you and make him pay for it...

Could be as simple as that the amp was just played in a smokey environment. My Fender Bandmaster reverb still smells like smoke when I power it up. The heat brings out the smoke smell in it. I agree with taking it in though to get it checked out. Hopefully the seller will stand behind it.

you flat out payed too much for the amp.

i have that exact same amp and think i payed $400 new?

my guess is the attenuator is getting too hot?

i'd say some help from the seller would defenantly be in line!

what's the upgraded speaker?
