I've got a line on a Bogner Ecstasy 101B.

What are your opinions? I think there are other versions. What should I look for?

Thanks.

Love the Ecstasy! The only one known widely to not sound great is a white chassis 101b. If the chassis is black, you're good to go.

The one thing worth noting, though, is that in '04 they made a slight change to the red channel for more gain. Personally, I prefer the pre '04 version, but because it's such a simple mod, you can reverse or add the change with ease.

What music do you play? Its a glorified Marshall JCM 800 type amp. With a Fender Deluxe Clean. Tons of gain. And a Plexi mode which gets pretty damn close to a real plexi if you dime it.

Dark, muddy, muffled, with a slow attack. I prefer brighter and tighter amps, with more high end presence.

I also think it sounds nothing like a Marshall SLP.

Dark i agree with, but while some call it muddy others call it chewy. And i think the red channel is the only problem with the amp not the blue channel. I think a boost pedal could tighten it up a bit.

I do agree that it really doesn't sound like a plexi. And overall, the red channel has less gain than a lot of other amps out there. I haven't played the 20th, but i do have the Shiva 20th and i like it a lot. MUCH better than the regular Shiva by a mile.

I didnt really find mine muddy, dark and muffled I'd agree with. I also didnt find the attack to my liking, very mushy.

Yeah I never could get the Red channel dialed in. The Blue channel wasn't too bad. If it had a bit more gain and hi end it would have been more to my liking.

Great amp but a little to warm and loose for me. Still, like the SLO, the lead tone is one of the best I've heard. It's not like the SLO I just mean both amps are killer for playing leads on. Find clips or vids or Gearge Lynchs Sacred Groove cd. Although I'm betting various amps were used on the record I know George used a Bogner 100b alot on that album. If you like the tone of that album then the 101b might be for you.

Love my XTC Classic (and yes, significantly more than the 101b I had fwiw). Just used it at a gig last night on the 1/2 power/old setting which I think knocks it down to about 25 watts, still didnt have it cranked but was definitely getting it cooking and really dug the tones with my LP. Other guitarist used a jubilee and LP, 3 female backing vox, one male lead etc., fun times. I really think the thing about the XTC is knowing how the excursion and presence work. "T"/tight is actually the baseline so to speak, M/medium and L/loose are actually loosening up the speaker damping/cone travel from the stock circuit which is more marshally. If you want the XTC to be tighter/more marshall like try keeping it on T and using the pre-eq on B2 and the presence between 2-3 o'clock. I also don't run the bass any higher than 10 o'clock generally.

Love my 2004 XTC. It leans a bit more towards vintage than many other multi-channel amps - I've owned a LOT of amps, and the XTC is my go to for classic and hard rock. If you're a death metal guy, the way the notes get chewy will drive you nuts. I like it. :) Sounds the best through the matching cab though in my opinion.

Cool amp, especially the Blue channel which is pure gold. Red channel is good, not great. Cleans can be nice if dialled in correctly.

I think they're great amps, but they have a specific sound/feel that you either love or you hate. They have a great master volume. Terrific fx loop. Built like a tank. Very full-featured with lots of voicing options.

I owned an XTC Classic for years and have played the 101B a bunch of times. To me, it wasn't so much dark as it was thick especially when you run it with more gain. It's got a ton of gain on tap, but the voicing is more on the vintage end of the spectrum. Someone described it as Vintage High Gain and to me, that's right on the money. The big reason I sold it was I moved to a more percussive and punchy tone. I started gravitating towards a more traditional Marshall tone. Then when I picked up the Splawn Quickrod, I basically stopped playing the XTC... LOL! :D

I had the 101b and classic and i liked them both, someday i wanna try the 20th.

I had a Cameron moded 101B that was great...but a bit too compressed on the red and blue channels. It was missing that Marshall punch if you know what I mean...
