I've got a line on a Bogner Ecstasy 101B.

What are your opinions? I think there are other versions. What should I look for?

Thanks.

What music do you play? Its a glorified Marshall JCM 800 type amp. With a Fender Deluxe Clean. Tons of gain. And a Plexi mode which gets pretty damn close to a real plexi if you dime it.

Overpriced and I hate new Bogners, last good one was the 100b..............................

And this amp can dialed in to have a very tight response. Definitely not a "slow attack".
No freakin way is that a tight / fast attack amp.
It certainly can be dialed in to get a tight thrash tone.

I owned a 101B and I'm gonna have to go ahead and completely disagree with you.

I agree.

The XTC can not do thrash. Not ever. The tones are not in that box. Too loose, dark, too slow of an attack, and it just doesn't have the edge or bite to the tone.

Thrash: Mesa Mark III/IV/V or Marshall JCM800 2203 + OD. That's thrash.

I have a Mesa MK III and a 20th A Xtc. I thought I was more of a Marshall guy but I keep going back to my Mesa. The 20th A covers the rest of the tones with ch1 being my clean Fender tone Ch2 my sort of Plexi tone and ch3 as my liquid lead tone. I havent played the other xtc models but this one put a stop to my amp buying. You have to figure out what "your" tone is. Everyone hears there favorite tone differently and with all the amp builders out there you can and will find it. Good luck with your search.

I play the 20th Ann. XTC and it has more bite, kerrang and Marshall crunch to the tone than the 101b. It is plenty tight for fast palm muted stuff, too. That being said I rarely care for thrash tones and 'over-the-top aggro-metal approved' levels of gain. I like to hear the open, woody knock of the gain structure and let my playing come through, keeping the gain from drenching the sound...let the power section kick in and roar for the hard rock riffs...the amp is too classy to just be thrashing away. It's sorta like asking if a Ferrari can race on a dirt track...yeah, it can, but you're missing the point.

My 20thA stays. Period. Why? Cuz it's beautiful...

Like anyone here who knows me doesn't know that already

I've had my 101b since 04 when the serial numbers were symbols. It's a great amp. I love the blue channels. I don't do de-tuned modern metal so it's perfect for me. I agree with Pete it sounds best with the Bogner cabs...

The XTC has been my holy grail since I first played one ten years ago. I finally picked-up an Ecstasy Classic last December and every single time that I plug into it I love it more. I usually have an ear-to-ear grin while playing it. Especially when using my Ubercab (loaded with 70's vintage G12-30s). SO fat, sweet, and crunchy. I'll run both that cab and the V30-loaded OS2X12 when I want to add some edge to the sound. This amp is very open-sounding and very agressive when run hard. I've previously owned some great amps (like my H&K Triamp Mk I and EL34 Shiva), but this XTC really is the end of the road for me. My GAS as disappeared since buying the XTC, and my wall of amps have all been sold on Ebay. Now I just use an Eleven Rack (with the new expansion pack containing XTC models) for daily practice and recording, and the XTC for gigs and just the thrill of kicking it up a notch on the weekends.

I own a 101B, and I'm going to have to shoot you down on this one real fast, Dan. Clips are coming now.

I agree with Danyeo, clips don't really count on this issue just imo.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but it doesn't mean they're right.

Saying an amp can't "do thrash," when it clearly can, is just a dumb statement.

If you say a deluxe reverb stock without a boost couldn't do thrash, I doubt anyone would disagree with you.

Don't get me wrong you can definitely "shoehorn" the 101B into almost any role especially recorded but you can just naturally tell when you play one the general design goals in mind it was designed for, just imo.

Edit: Just commenting on the 101B specifically not the other variations.

It definitely wasn't designed for the thrash player in mind, but neither was a Marshall Plexi... look what you can do with those.

Here's thrash. No effects aside from a HP/LP; I just threw up a mic and played my guitar

I actually like that squish inbetween the palm mutes, normally don't for that style of music.

Thanks. The tone definitely is a bit fizzy, but I'm confident it would be great in a band mix. Again, it's not my go to amp for thrash, but it does it just fine if you're using it for thrash ;)

Dark, muddy, muffled, with a slow attack. I prefer brighter and tighter amps, with more high end presence.

I also think it sounds nothing like a Marshall SLP.

Dark i agree with, but while some call it muddy others call it chewy. And i think the red channel is the only problem with the amp not the blue channel. I think a boost pedal could tighten it up a bit.

I do agree that it really doesn't sound like a plexi. And overall, the red channel has less gain than a lot of other amps out there. I haven't played the 20th, but i do have the Shiva 20th and i like it a lot. MUCH better than the regular Shiva by a mile.
You're still digging the Shiva?
