Need Pickup Recommendation (BKP hating content)

I am going to forget about the new axe for a second and see what you like about the gear you already have.

What do you have in the JP6, if not a Dimarzio Crunch Lab? The JP6 comes stock with a Crunch Lab which is a pretty low output (11k) ceramic pup.

The Dragon II's in the Custom 22 is medium output at 15k.

Are you playing the new axe through the VH4, and don't like how it sounds there? The V loves lower output pickups and it seems you are going in the wrong direction. What guitar and pickup combination sounds best through your rig?

Personally, I have a Herbert that I use with an ESP LTD (EMG 81/85), Les Paul (8k BurstBucker Pros), and a PRS CU24. When I got the PRS I absolutely hated the bridge HFS (15k). It was trebly and mushy with the Herbert. I figured it must be the pickups, so I replaced them with a BKP Rebel Yell (14.4k). They sounded very similar to the HFS (as they should given they both had the same output). I then assumed it must be the wood and/or the guitar  I then figured I would give the PRS the benefit of the doubt and do one more pup swap before I got rid of the PRS. This is when I got a WCR Godwood

For my style of play, playing with this type of amp (high gainer Diezel), the lower output pups just work. The only exception that I found is with the EMG combo. They are very smooth through the Herbert.

Can you do a pickup swap with Tim (BKP) or whoever built the guitar? I would give some of Tim's Vintage (Mule or Riff Raff) or Vintage Hot(VHII) pups another shot.

Unfortunately the gear in my sig hasn't been updated in awhile... I'm just playing through a 6505 at the moment, a couple practice amps... and a bunch of stuff in the studio... regardless of the amp I know the sound I'm going for in my head...

I think you may be right about the lower output pups... I absolutely love the Dragon II's in my PRS... I'm actually not a fan of the Crunch Lab... but I don't plan on keeping the guitar so I've never swapped it...

I've typically always played Mahogany bodied guitars... so the only pickups I have experience with are in guitars with that type of wood... I have played a lot of guitars recently made of the woods that I just had my custom made out of (which is why I had it built that way in the first place) and they sounded massive... I just can't remember what the damned pickups were in them...

I'm leaning towards a Dimarzio Dominion I believe... not sure what to throw in the neck, but that's not nearly as important to me...

Thanks so much for the detailed response!!!

dragon II is actually around 12k-13k
and it's bright as fuck, definitely much brighter than a ceramic warpig
I'm not sure you're bothered by the c-pig voicing and output excesses or its dry response compared to other brands ultra compressed high output models
what you could without spending much is trying different magnets in your warpig

Maybe change the tone pots or caps to get rid of some of the brightness.

To my experience Swamp Ash body = lot of sparkly highs and kinda loose lows, recessed mids.
Ebony top, if thin, doesn't really matter. Rosewood neck and Ebony fretboard = more highs and presence.
Using a Warpig in that thing is calling for a lot more highs, presence and pick attack.
Anything but warm, round and mid focused.
Changing the PUPs around will make a difference, but it will not change the basic character of the instrument.

I had the same brightness problem in my RGA121...The WCR Ironman with A5 magnets are absolutly sick. They are also a bit of a darker pickup, but they have pretty good definition. They can also do a pretty good clean. I have an A5 magnet in the bridge, and an A2 in the neck pickup to get a bit of a rounder sound from the neck pickup. I tried it with a Ceramic magnet, but it made the pickup a lot brighter.

The Afwayu is similar to the Ironman, but it isn't as high output.

the afwayu is bassy as fuck, but still brighter than alnico warpig, at least as bright as a c-pig
sounds like a drier and bloated nailbomb (not in a bad way, actually)
definitely more aggressive than both alnico pig and nailbomb, not sure compared to the c-pig

Guitar is Swamp Ash Body, thinn Ebony Top, Rosewood Neck, Ebony Fretboard...

Ebony top ? Thats very unusual. At any rate all the wood choices here are going to make for a very scooped sounding guitar, which will definitely contribute to a noisy/scratchy/clicky sounding high end.

I'd suggest a pup with the lows and top attenuated & a boosted mids.

BKP non ceramic is where it's at for me... i'v allot of their PU's. Never really liked the ceramics. I LOVE the alnico's tho.
