I have a Alder HSS strat and I would like a new bridge pickup for it. I have been using a Duncan Custom in it for a while, and while I love the pickup, it may not be the greatest compliment for this guitar. I swapped a DiMarzio Super Distortion into it just to see what it would do, and it's a nice change, but it's not what I'm looking for. Here's where I stand now with the pickups that have been in (and out) of this guitar.

Duncan Invader: Used this pickup for a while in this guitar, too bassy and not enough midrange.

Duncan Custom: Used this one for a while as well. It's got a nice middy rock sound with tons of clarity and never flubs out, but it's too bright and lacks bottom for this guitar.

Super Distortion: High freaking output pickup that actually seems to add gain to my sound (which I like), and I actually don't mind the bassiness that people complain about with this pickup, I boost anyway so it's not really a problem. The problem I have is that it sounds a bit hollow and the midrange is a bit weird.

Now here's where the decision must be made and the options at hand. I was going to grab an Alnico II magnet and put it in the Custom to round it out a bit, but I've heard Custom Customs, and it's still a pretty PAFy "rock" sound... and I think I may want to go more metal with this guitar. I desire a darker, more full sound with lots of output and even some mud and grit may be desirable. Almost along the lines of the Super Distortion, but without the weird mids. I don't really want any "Boutique" or "Handmade" pickups, but something off the beaten path could be considered as well. Aside from the Alnico II mag swap in the Custom, I was thinking of either getting a Duncan Distortion or DiMarzio Crunch Lab. I have the Duncan Distortion in my Jackson RR3, which I very much like the tone of, so I was thinking it would be a good idea, but the two guitars in question have a very different sound. The Crunch Lab, does that have the typical DiMarzio "hollowness" in the midrange?

I know you're only listing passives, but honestly, the EMG 85 sounds pretty killer in my TAT. Thickened it up, has clarity, sounds tight, works great for metal and the singles in the neck/middle give it some versatility. I've tried nearly all the pickups you listed in this guitar, and the 85 fit it the best.

A CS would be pretty bright in there. If he were to go BKP, he should look at the HD, MM or C-Pig.

It's not that I'm against using active pickups, I just don't think they would look very good in a green Fender strat with pearl pickguard   What's a TAT?

Check out the Dimarzio Steve's Special, and the Air Norton. Right now I've got the Air Norton in my HSS Super strat, and it works really well. It's a bit of a lower gain pickup, but it has great articulation in the bridge position. The Steve's Special I've used in RG's many times, and I always liked the result. Higher output, tight mids, and plenty of upper end cut, but it was never thin to me.

I'd go with a Seymour Duncan Distortion. I was using Dimarzion Super 3's and Super Distiortions and wasn't 100% happy. When I put in the Duncan Distortion it was perfect. The perfect amount of gain/tone and a way better feel than the Dimarzio's. I've also found the DD works well in all my guitars - they all sound different, but they still sound good.

Email Tim, tim@bareknucklepickups.co.uk, tell him what it is you're looking for, in what kind of guitar, and BUY what he recommends. It's that simple.

You won't be let down.

BKPs, man... FTW!!

PRS- Tremonti- thick crunch. PRS-HFS- better mids. Some other options for you. High Order makes some of the best low output pickups out there if you like that direction since your using a boost. Get the right spec'd one and your gold.

+1

got great advice, and a killer bridge pickup to match the sound i wanted and the guitar in question

Since you liked the Duncan custom, I would suggest the Anderson H2+ or H2. I have an H2+ in the bridge of my strat. I know you said you didn't want 'boutique' pickups but the Andersons are price right around SD, they are very reasonable.

If you like the Duncan Custom but think it has too much high end, you should try the Custom Custom

What about some of Suhr's pickups? I'm trying to work out which from them would be a good middle pickup to go with my Aldrich humbuckers and a 5-way switch.

I've got an Aldrich going in a Stratocaster this week. I'll let you know!
