If I see one more "never gigged" or "pulled it out once, and it went right back in the case" I think I'm gonna friggin barf. Granted, the occasional bedroom only guitar collector may be on here and true, he may take that prized PRS out once every 6 months to wipe it with a diaper, but Christ, isn't anyone in a friggin band on this forum? When you buy an amp, and your in a band, you friggin turn that shit up dudes. I just can't believe some of the ads on here...,for example, a dude has a DiezEl Herbert for sale and he's the original owner, bought in 2008, never gigged it and only turned it on a couple times. A couple is 2 dudes. You've had the amp for 8 years and you've only turned it on a couple times. That's like a power up every leap year man. The never gigged thing gets me just as much. Who cares if the amps been gigged. If you think about it, if you gigged the amp, that would mean the thing sounded awesome enuff to your ear that you wanted your audience to enjoy the sonic bliss as well. That's the amp I want. Gigged or not, the amps face and head shell is going to say a lot as to how it was treated, not whether it was gigged. I know dudes that after a gig, they buff, shine, and armorall their gear to a showroom finish. Amps that have been pushed are made to be pushed. The don't mind. They like it dudes. Tubes and speakers sound great broken in a little bit.
I think this embellisent about how minty friggin fresh your gear that's for sale is has gotten a bit out of hand. Just be upfront. The market on all this shit has been in the tank for a while anyways. Very little of what floats around in these classified ads are good investments as far as resale goes, we all taKe a bath if you buy new and sell used. Trying to make a few extra bucks by telling me your amp has never left your bedroom or your "smoke free, air Conditioned and humidity controlled studio is hilarious. Everybody got the smoke free music studio these days. Or the one about the fact that your mint amp with its and quad of KT88 nuclear brain damage pumpin tubes has never seen light of day from your bedroom.....just a total joke. And I haven't even spoke of the guys that buy stuff and play it for 15 minutes and then it's right back up on RT classifieds with that the Windex price bump, and you know who you are.
Can I get an Amen?
Ok. I'm off the soapbox.

"Only played by an 87 year old woman every other Sunday at Church services"

Don't blow a gasket dude

It's only a sign that:
The only people that can afford very expensive gear are too busy working so they can buy that very gear (and other stuff), hence they don't have time to play it.

Agreed. Everybody's got a "smoke-free, climate controlled, humidity controlled studio" in their house. In other words, "a spare bedroom full of guitar shit with a closed window."

So your buying the "took it out of the case, looked at it, smiled and it's been in the closet ever since last Tuesday"?

my Heartbreaker head has had the shit played out of it since 2000. It's dusty, smells gnarly. It has battle scars. There is rust on the chassis mounting screws. The handle is fraying. It will only pass to a new owner when my widow sells it to pay the property taxes (and this may come sooner these days, I'm not getting any younger).

I never bought anything musical for resale or investment value. All my stuff has had the shit played out of it and it shows. And I like it.

Right on brother. Screw that no rips in the tolex shit. Some real wear and tear is where it's at. Watch amp companies start doing the "relic'd thing. It's not that far off of a thought

I dont abuse my gear.....but I play the shit out of it!
Gonna get nicks and dings.

Even though I never say that shit, I always chuckle when people put that because of the aforementioned reasons.

Next thing I'm gonna post for sale is gonna say "battle tested to hell and back" , or "I banged a groupie and her mom on top of this hot amp after the show in the back of the van, may have pussy juice on it"
Hahaha   I'd charge a bit extra for the Puss Juice

Yeah, I play the hell out of my stuff. I'm a gigging player.

Many guys just don't have the time, or make the time, to gig.

It's ok man. ;)

I'm your guy.

I don't play in a band

I never gig anything

Nothing ever leaves my studio room

I basically never buy anything unless it's practically minty fresh, or I don't want it.

You are pissed off for no reason, there are multiple types here at RT. Some of us are collectors, not band members. We are working professionals, which consumes most of our time, but also provides the finances to "play" with and "collect" basically whatever we want. So yeah, I want to buy gear that is in awesome shape, but at an used price so I don't loose my ass on my hobby. Also goes the other way, you buy something from me, you're getting something minty fresh because I don't beat anything up night after night gigging and everything stays comfortably and never leaves my "climate controlled, smoke free, fart free studio.

Not only that, I have never seen anyone EVER be able to gig a piece of gear on a regular basis (that isn't completely protected by road cases) and it not get bumps and bruises, it's nearly impossible.

I guess (unfortunately) I'm one of those guys now too. I used to gig regularly, but even then I had my gear for rehearsing / playing shows, and my 'fancy' stuff stayed at home, simply because I didn't want to risk a 3-4k guitar getting wrecked or stolen, when a 1k would do the job perfectly and the audience wouldn't know the difference.

Now, we have two young kids so while I have 30 or so guitars out in our 'dining room' (i.e. they're not literally in a case in the closet), time constraints mean that a lot of the guitars which I bought new fit into the 'never gigged' territory, even if they are all actually played once in a while. And yup, it's kind of stupid to have so many guitars (even if you are gigging / recording), but hey, it's my money and I'll do what I want with it :)

This thread is totally misleading, I thought there was a Mint Christ available
Wasn't sure if "Mint" was the condition, the flavor, or the color.

I have no problem hearing a piece of gear has lived a smoke free life. I don't want to buy any gear that smells like an ashtray.

My neighbor has a brand new Corvette that he never, ever drives, but he has his garage open everyday, and washes it about every other day so everyone can see  Reminds me of this Biker pic. Someone should do the guitar player version of this. :D

I'm not in a band either. And I don't have any time to. I'm too busy doing other shit. Like work. And travel. And having a social life. If I could... I honestly wouldn't want to even be in a band. That's not what I'm about. I'd rather just jam every once in a while with a drummer and a bassist or something. I'm more of a gear head than a musician anyway. I like to build amps. I like to tinker with shit. I wouldn't even call myself a musician. I can play the guitar and drums ok. But I don't write songs and pretend I'm gonna make it big one day. It's just a hobby for me.

But the toughest part is that I've moved around a lot for work. So even if I were in a band, it wouldn't last very long. Japan, Atlanta, NYC, Detroit, SF. Lots of places. Actuallly you know what, I did play drums in a band in Japan for a bit. We did perform a few times at local festivals and shit. I totally forgot about that. It was fun!

But yeah, I'd rather just jam with a drummer and have fun with it.

Hobbyists/collectors always outnumber those in bands on gear forums.

A lot of used gear will be in great condition because of that, but you'll still see embellishment (in some cases) in for sale ads because sellers can't help themselves because of the used market.

You bet

Sold a 3000$ amp to a friend about 3 months ago
Guy hasn't even played it yet (doesn't like playing in the summer)

Also traded an amp with with some other dude...
My amp was a 9/10 and his was a 10/10... he insisted we swap leather handles and rubber feet so he could keep those from his amp, because they were "in better condition"
Yes, some people really are freaks

The Keeley compressor & box I bought a few years back from someone on Ebay arrived absolutely hum-dinging of smoke. Like the previous owner had kept it in his studio, smoking 20 a day with no windows.
I gave him neutral feedback as this is something I expect to be mentioned, or at least I would have expected the item to have been aired-out. Had I known, I would have concentrated on other auctions. Smoke has a horrendous affect on electronic equipment.

When we're talking boutique expensive guitars & amplifiers, having some assurance that the item has been well looked after goes a long way for me. I expect a seller to tell the truth. If something is well-used & regularly gigged then it absolutely changes the price. Simple as that. If the power tubes on an amp have been thrashed, It might need a re-tube. Re-tubes aren't peanuts.

What people choose to do with their stuff is totally up to them. I don't get to pump the master on my VH4 above 9 o clock & it's a stadium-worthy back-line, arguably wasted on a, now, non-gigging recreational musician. That along with some custom guitars & pedals amounts to many thousands of pounds & dollars.

I play my guitar a lot, but I make an effort to look after them. Might have to start putting them back in the case once my daughter arrives though! :)

I get where you're coming from: gear is meant to be played, especially for an audience.

But, for many good reasons, many guitarist don't. Fortunately for those that do, we still buy gear- lots of it-, which brings down the unit costs for new and loads the classifieds with minty used equipment. Can you imagine how much gear would have to cost, if only those that regularly-gigged bought equipment?
