New Avenged Sevenfold... not what I was expecting. UPDATED

The whole album is actually awesome. It's taken me a week or so to really appreciate it. Like listening to Rush's Hemispheres the first time. Then it's just, damn, that's good, progressive rock.

They're really moving forward as a band, and pushing hard, don't sound close to retiring. Brooks is an awesome addition. Still sounds like A7X. Great lead sounds. Very little compression, even on drums, and they left the vox largely untreated. This album's easier to listen all the way through than any since Waking IMO. Not a bad or cringey song on there.

I'm a big fan of Waking though. Diamonds has some great stuff, and City/Critical Acclaim/Nightmare all have some great songs and some great moments IMHO. I think maybe once they let their conservative politics show, they lost a lot of positive media attention. But the reviews are coming in very good on the new one, and I'm getting it.

I'm no Avenged Fan, but this album made me take notice. I bought it and am wearing it out. Very solid record.

Gotta say, very powerful video. Extremely well done and good song too. I don't know much about these guys as I don't follow modern music that much but they are solid and I dug the vocals. I will definitely look into more of their music.

I was never a fan of the band because I can not stand the production/mix of their records. Then I saw them live and thought, holy shit these guys are awesome why couldn't they make their records sound like their show? Nightmare was great for me, their sound was very good on the last record but the songs not so much. Got the new record last week. I think the songs are a good step forward for the band vs. the last record. But the production/mix I think is a big step backward vs. the last two records. They need to take what they write in the studio, then record it live and release it, I think it would be way better...

Got bored at 2:03... :bash:

Kudos to you for making it that far. I hate that singers voice.
I don't love the singer either, but the band altogether makes it bearable.

I must admit I dig this new record.

Interesting. I like the production. They sound more natural. Seems they did not compress/brick wall the heck out of it, which is the first metal band in a long time to do that. It's a quieter more dynamic album. Listening to it on CD and turning it up, it's their best sound, certainly on guitars, ever. The guitar tone comes through great without all the compression. They also didn't treat the vocals much. The drums are a different more dry sound - can't tell what they did there but it sounds to me like they didn't complete squash them either. Unfortunately this means the album wasn't mixed and mastered for YouTube and mp3 players, and the sound seems to suffer in those formats, where it can sound a little weak and quiet.

Andy Wallace produced/mixed it....dude does a great job at getting the sounds up front without using the studio to treat everything. It was a conscious decision on the band's part to ensure the album wasn't brickwalled, from what I've read.

I really love this album, definitely my favorite since the self-titled one. I only listened to the last one once and wasn't a huge fan of Nightmare, but this new shit is very refreshing for them and for modern music in general. Wackerman is a fucking beast and though I don't like his vocal tone choices all the time, Shadows can sing his ass off. These guys are huge and instead of writing an album full of 3:30 singles, they wrote a bunch of 6+ minute tunes based around a concept of space travel and crazy shit. Good on them!

Here's something interesting from the forum:

This was taken from a video of them in the studio. So far, I can identify a Bogner Uberschall Rev 2 (they've used one for practically their entire career), a Schecter Hellwin, a Mesa Boogie Mark V, a Jet City 333, and some sort of Marshall JCM 800. Not sure what the other are.

I've only heard The Stage when I'm at the gym and it's one of the best songs the gym plays. Actually, I can't believe they would even play a song like that!

Wow dude, that was really really awesome.

I had a lot of thoughts about it. First I will say I could only listen, at work and can't watch the video. The lyrics were hard to grasp because I was paying attention to the music but it seems like the song may be about their previous drummer?

I absolutely love Syn's guitar playing. The lots of minor almost classical style is really awesome.

So the first half of the song was cool, great intro but then yeah the first couple of verses sounded like the very typical Ax7 from the past few years with a cool heavy riff mixed in but then the song just kind of drifted and that to me is when it got really really awesome.

When that first solo came in and they just changed the feel it was great, then the acoustic part in the middle. Really liked this a lot. It might not have made sense regarding basic theory which can be odd but I am glad they did it and I am glad the song was lengthy.

I guess it made me feel better about my writing. Not that I am on the same level but more like cool, you do not have to stick to the rules as long as it flows.

Definitely need to check it out again and watch the video. I will say as a negative the vocals did not do it for me. I usually like his singing and it usually fits but to me he seemed a little out of place for most of the song.

Very awesome though overall, thanks for posting dude.

Literally nothing didn't make sense from a theory perspective, dunno what you're talking about.
