Hi All,

I'd appreciate some guidance.

I've just received my brand new Diezel VH4. Before first powering up I visually checked all the valves and they seemed OK.

I noticed that with power on and in standby there is a very loud hum, like a transformer hum but way, louder.

This is my first VH4, but comparing it to other amp Engl E670SE and Friedman BE100DLX it is many times louder than them.

None of the tube check lights on the back are lit, it's the correct voltage for the UK and the noise is not really noticeable when taken off standby. All the channels work, light light up etc. I haven't checked the midi and without any specific frame of reference it sounds OK. I'm using a decent power lead and speaker cable.

I've gone back to the nice people at Thomann and hope for a reply soon, but I may not know what they are talking about as I'm not even vaguely technical.

I've had a look about but can't find anything that's exactly the same issue and I'm hoping that someone here may have some insights.

So any help, opinion or suggestions would be most welcome.

Many thanks

Welcome to R-T

Can't really help outside of high gain amps can hum loudly, but this does seem off a bit as you explain it. Does it hum loudly if all volumes and gains are turned down?

If you don't get a lot of response here I guarantee you will if you create a NAD thread in the mains. We love our NADs

Thanks for the reply and welcome. NADs are great! I'm sure this is a little local difficulty.

I have others and they don't. It's not an evil sound just far too loud. It's coming from the amp itself not out of the speaker (it's in standby). Hum is constant volume and tone irrespective of channel or volume and gain.

Tried different power lead, power socket, speaker lead and cab (not likely as is not in run mode, just standby).

Emailed Thomann, sure they'll get back to me. They're supposed to be good like that.

Its something and nothing probably but I won't risk any experimental poking as it's still under warranty, plus I know jack about stuff like that....

I know the mains is very loud on a wizard. But i would flip off standby and crank it, and forget til next time.

I respect the optimism and salute your courage. Sadly I'm a bit chicken with brand new gear (24hrs old to be exact), it does play OK. If it a characteristic of the amount then so be it. Like I said it's my first VH4 so all new territory and no idea what normal is. It has had a good going over on all channels, varying volumes gains etc. just want to know what this is. Never played a wizard, heard good things tho.

@Techdeth you had this issue?

Have other amps done this in the same room this amp is hooked up and being played?
