New Diezel VH4 Loud Hum

Probably normal. My former VH4 from 2004 did this and my current VH4 from 2018 does it too. My Herbert Mk1 hums even a little bit louder. It is just a power transformer vibrations. Check if all screws of the transformer are tight. And maybe check the wall voltage. Where are you located? Are you sure that you have the correct voltage version?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Opinion seems divided on this. It being brand new, and not in the least bit tekkie, I've organised a return. Shame and lots of agro but better safe than sorry. Wall voltage is 230 (mostly) reasonably stable too, according to electricians.

Best of luck on the new one. Please let us know. Like I said I have zero experience with Diezel but my Dual Rectifier hums a fair bit once off standby but otherwise pretty quiet. My Splawn is almost dead quiet regardless. I could have it off Standby and the volumes cranked and it is quiet. I chalk that up to massive expensive transformers.

But both amps have fairly new tubes and and are actually 'connected' together via a A/B/Y box and running off the same wall outlet (as they should).

Which splawn do you have and how do you like it? I’m thinking of getting a quick rod but I’ve never played any splawn amp

DM me if you want more. I am the moderator at the Splawn proboard forums. I like it a lot but probably gonna off it to get some higher gain stuff. I've come to learn that Splawns are just too much for me. Too loud and almost too articulate - if that's possible. They will frickin cut though. I did a YT vid of back and forth with my ABY. No matter how loud I turn up the Dual Rectifier (with ear protection), the Splawn will ALWAYS dominate. It just cuts right down the middle. For a gigging musician who needs hot rodded Marshally tones - you won't have any problem playing with and over anyone else in the band. That said, if you do get one, I would suggest one of the newer ones with the tweakable options. Those options can help with the volume and the "weird mids".

PS: I just changed my user name from 311splawndude to 311boogieman

OK, now I'm done.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Sure thing, will do. It's with the nice people at Thomann. Hopefully replacement due soon. I've a few amps, including a Diezel Herbert MK2, and none made anywhere near that amount of noise. I'm pretty sure I made the right call, being nontechnical and never having owned one I've no frame of reference, so if the new one is quite it's was a good call if it's noisy then at least I can be sure it's normal. For the brief time I had it it's an amazing amp. Channel 3 well deserves all the hype but Channel 2 had some rather lush musical crunchyness! Can't wait to get the new one up and running. Thanks

When I had mine many moons ago I was getting this high pitched squeal..kinda like feedback. Put an at7 in v1 and that didn’t help. Come to find out it was a one spot pedal power adapter causing the problem. Check all the obvious stuff first….

Lots of amps do this brand new. Chassis can resonate with PT 60hz. Loosen the power transformer bolts just a little bit (don’t go all they way you’ll then have to open the whole amp up to tighten them again) put some rubber material, washers or whatever, between chassis and PT. Tighten bolts. Problem solved.

Hi All, Just received the new VH4, carried out pre startup checks, glassware etc. Nasty buzzing/hum not there. Just sweet, sweet tones! Much appreciation for all the input. My advice to any experiencing similar on NEW amps, send it back, best to be sure. Many thanks to the Thomann team for a painless, hassle free process. Now I'm going to play the crap out of it!

Send it back to Thomann, transformer may have been damaged in shipping. Diezels are usually rock solid, i've had 5 or 6 of them. Dead quiet and well built.
