New Gear vs Used Gear

I usually buy Used.

Amps: used and most of the ones I have bought are either way to old for warrenty or new enough it carries over or has a 5 year or life time warrenty.

Guitars: Either but I prefer new

Effects: I have been buying used lately because the stuff I want hasnt been made in many years   I have been looking at Strymon pedals and most of them selling used are not that much cheaper so I might just buy them new.

You can save a lot of money buying used. It's just like a car. I don't tend to buy those new anymore. I'm handy with fixing things so it isn't a problem for me to repair them and in the end, I save big $$$.

Gear, I've always purchased new in the past, but I have started to find some used pieces here and there and have enjoyed the savings. My Marshall 1960AHW cab is like 1400 new, I found one at my local deal that was used for a couple of months, had a tolex scratch in the back and I picked it up for 500! That was a killer deal!

:)

only 2 amps in the collection were bought new, the marshall kk and the dar. i'd buy them both new again right now,in a second.

of the other 30+ amps that have came though the room, only one other was new. that one was a total wash....sucked worst than anything i have ever heard. all the rest were or are used.

It depends on the price of the new item. High dollar stuff I try to go used. Smaller stuff like effects pedals I go new (Mostly because I want it now!!!)

My wife is in the biz and has access to almost all brands through her venders. So, If she can get it for me the decision is easy. I go new.

All my current amps except one are "pre owned" :D. (ENGL, VHT, 6505, 2203KK, Recto, GH50L, Soldano) I bought my JSX new in '05 and still have it.
Bought my guitars new, but the last one I bought used and it's great.

The only time I will buy new is when I absolutely can't wait until I can pick it up used. There is absolutely no reason in my mind to buy guitars, amps, cabs or effects new especially if you can inspect it or test it first...

+1

Most of my gear I got used for really good deals, and the only new items I also got really good deals on due to hook ups or I probably would've gone used there too. I don't even want to think of how much money I've saved over the years lol. With a guitar my only real concern is how worn the frets are, it's pretty shocking how literally unplayed the frets were on the used ones I've got (other than my '63, those were totally shot and I had jumbos put on but those were the original frets). I take good care of my gear but I also don't freak out if there's a nick or ding somewhere as I've gigged every piece of gear I've owned at some point, they're all bought for playing not looking at, though admittedly I do look at them too... ooo pretty lol. . But I do love the guys who seemingly just looked at their gear because then I end up with a nearly unplayed guitar for used prices! :D

I have no problem buying used higher end gear. I let other people over pay for new and lose money and take the hit when they sell. A MFG warranty is not worth $1000-$2000 to me ;) I look for good deals so I know I could sell everything I have acquired over the years and still break even of make a profit. If I bought all this shit new I'd have less of it and I'd lose thousands and thousands of dollars if I bought new and sold out today.

Used is the way I go for most things. I always look on ebay, see what they are going for, especially in progress auction, and price a little lower. I try to not take a massive loss if I don't like it.

Used is almost like a buy and try thing to me. For new, it is something I know I will keep and usually it will be a custom order.

I'm much the same here.

I go through a lot of used guitars in a year, in average 15 a year, from that, maybe one will stick with me. Amps if I can, I like to buy new, just because you don't know the full history of it....however, that's not always possible, so if there's something I really want, I'll look for a cheap used one and go from there

I ALWAYS buy used if I can... The only 2 things I don't buy used are strings and picks... For obvious reasons... To me, guitars are tools to do a job. Yeah, you grow attached to certain ones and you make a lot of memories with your favorites... But they're a tool used to perform a job. In this case, make music. I used to freak about every little scratch and everything and spend 20 minutes wiping it off after gigs and blah blah blah... I snapped out of that once I realized "it's Rock 'n Roll, it ain't supposed to be perfect." I let my Explorer wear her battlescars with pride now... I don't abuse my equipment. I use it. So I actually prefer to buy guitars that are "broken in" already with a few dings and such... That way I'M not the one to put the first mark on it. My Explorer I got used but in like-new shape. So I'm putting all the miles on her... Same goes for cabs/heads/racks... If you can get it used for the right price and it's in good condition. Do it. You get the same for less. Let somebody else pay the depreciation on it...

I bought almost all my gear used. The only time it has come back to bite me was when I had a 5150II completely die on me. Still, overall, the money I have saved from buying used has still been worth it so far (knock on wood).

Always look for used first. I only buy new if I can get a great deal on it

This here. While it is certainly nice to be the original owner of a kick ass piece of gear, I am by no means worried that something used will fail in a day. Most things I would consider buying, especially used are made fairly well.

Amps, pedals, cabs ect. used.

Guitars, I have to go new or in virtually unplayed condition.

Another point to remember is that a lot of gear is discontinued that we often GAS for. Both in the guitar and amp world.
So, sometimes there is no choice but to buy used.

All my amps were bought used — VH4, CCV, Einstein (in the past so were my Chupacabra, Uberschall, Rectifier, and Hot Cat). My guitars are both 30 years old, so they're obviously used. I had a PRS Artist Singlecut that was bought new. I think that's the only piece of gear I've bought new.

Wait, no... I bought my Bogner 4x12 new. And just got a Scumback speaker, new. But for the most part, buying used is smarter when it comes to musical equipment. But sometimes it depends on if that thing is still available new to begin with.

Noooooo! Let's encourage people to buy NEW!
Where else will schleps like us find an abundance of awesome used gear to score for decent prices???

Its interesting seeing all differing opinions around here. However, it seems like the for the majority here, used is the way to go. Im GASing for another PRS and I'm thinking that a lightly used PRS is the way Im going to go. Unless, I get hung up on a custom color that's hard to find.
