New Judas Priest 2014

Sounds like typical Priest to me, which is cool
The solos were fun & interesting

The vocals aren't bad, typical Halford
The rhythm section is repetitive, sounds like a lazy version of Hell Patrol, at least the drums/bass were recorded correctly
The chorus sucks IMO, sounds too much like power metal
The post-chorus section is the best part guitar-wise
Who recorded the guitar tracks? They sound horrible. They went for their chorus-metallic sound of the 80s, but it's very poorly recorded. Not heavy at all, doesn't sit well in the mix
The first solo was almost nonexistent
The second solo, probably by Faulkner, sounds like a poor man's Dave Murray and doesn't fit the mix at all.

Overall pretty lazy effort, could have been much better with just a bit more involvement

curious-what kind of monitoring setup did you use for this critique?

Yes, it is curious that the new guy gets a huge volume boost, especially compared to solo #1
I don't care, I love me some Priest
Color me fanboi (is that in the Crayola box?)

Hey, I own all their albums (except for Rocka Rolla)
It's just too bad that Tipton (who seems like a lazy bastard that can't even play his parts right any more) prefers to record the thing on Pro Tools rather than buying some studio time and hiring a guy like Roy Z

The dude is 66 with lots of mileage. That's not lazy, that's exhausted lol

Either way, it's time for him to join his (ex)pal Downing on the gold courses

Guitar tones were atrocious. As they have been since Ram it Down; only even more washed out.

I have loved these guys for probably 30 years+ by now? The only album I don't own is Nostrodamus and most likely this one. I would never say they should hang it up; but I definitely don't feel the magic as I did when listening to Screaming or Defenders so many years ago. It's tough to keep that kind of streak alive. Either way thanks for sharing!

As a huge Priest fan for over 3 decades, I have to say this is truly horrible in every aspect

I think you guys nailed it..

Halford can still bring it in the studio, but his vocals sound uninspired and in some parts, just plain sleepy and almost spoken.
Is this Hell Patrol 2? lol that was spot on Business. Sounds like they took the riffs from Painkiller but the tone from Ram it Down and made a hybrid retro baby that i have already heard before. Did Glenn play the first solo? It was pretty bad and sounded a lot like him now..sloppy and technically unable to do what he used to. I'll def. cut him some slack because he is 66 but sometimes you have to realize when it might be time to hang em up. The rest of the solos were pretty good, must be the new guy.

Travis still sounds awesome though.. I guess there isn't much for him to do seeing as he has been playing the same 2-3 patterns for the last what, 25 years? This might be their attempt at cashing in on the "retro" craze but their heavier albums with the ripper and first album back with Rob were probably in the right direction vs. the production and song writing on this one.

PS- maybe we should all get our ears checked, reading through the youtube comments, most people love it!

I would have notched the guitars up a bit in the mix, but it sounds pretty good to me.

It's Judas Priest. Sounds like Judas Priest. I like Judas Priest.

I just can't stand chorused rhythm sounds in metal or hard rock (looking right at you Zakk), or too much verb. It just sounds like bad power metal when Priest should be more driving in your face. If Halford's voice wasn't on it I wouldn't have listened past 30 seconds. I made it to the first solo and it was goodnight Francis….Uhh

I definately preferred when they used passive pickups, they just sounded huge on Defenders. I just miss old Priest, I don't like this.

Been a priest fan for over 30 years. I really didnt care for this much.
And I did listen top it a couple times to give it a chance. It was ok. Nothing grabbing like Pain Killer.

I agree, as soon as I heard that shit on painkiller I said fuck it, priest is gone. this at least sounds better vocally- he's not screaming into the mic anymore. The recording is terrible... just compare it to the analog defenders of the faith recording... no contest. They need to rethink things, go back to using real amps and recording like they did in the past. I'm still going to buy it though..lol

and this is my 1000th post.. what a loser, I should be playing not typing

You know they really peaked with Turbo. Now that's some classic Priest

I reckon K.K. saw too many video's of his perm from those days and thought it more honorable to quit than chance it happening again.
