Brand new 2017 LP R9... or as they are termed them this year... Custom Shop LP Standard R9. I've been waiting for a monsta-top 2107 R9 and this one filled the billed and checked all the boxes. Winner, winner... chicken dinner. I'm not a usual fan of HCSB finish... but this year's "Washed Cherry" is very subtle, with an extraordinary fade to it. I've got 2 of the 2016 Reissues (R9/R8)... and dug the tone so much... I had to give the 2017 a go. The main difference is now for 2017 you get the maple top with horsehide glue to the body, and other "True Historic" appointments: plastics, rings, etc only available previously in the True Historic models. Really killer axe all the way around. Looks match the tone. Really loud, resonant, big sounding rock guitar. Flawless cosmetics and functionally. Gibson is making some of the best Custom Historic Reissue LPs ever IMHO. They've dialed in the formula. The CustomBucker pups sound great. No need to run out and drop extra money for your fav vintage set. These really capture a lot of the original PAF sound/feel. These also sound killer for any sort of metal/modern hard-rock... just season with your fav pups to taste.

That is a true beauty. Huge congrats on that one. Well done

Thanks guys. I've been looking at these for awhile... but couldn't find anything with a killer top. There are bunch more "realistic, vintage looking" tops/grain patterns this year... but who wants that?! Go big or go home, I say. :D

Weight is right at 8 pounds 14 ounces. All the 2017s seem a little closer to the 9.0 pound mark this year. My R8 is the lightweight of the group at 8 pounds 4 ounces.

Here's a few pics of my 2016 R9:

Wow. Now we need a pic of all 3. That is killer

Definitely. We've had nothing but almost 7 days straight of pouring rain and cloudy weather. Outdoor group trio shots to come.

Yhat sticker on the pickguard is awesome bro lol.

She's a beauty, congratulations! I love the top, not too tight, not too loose, what R9's should be.

Congrats. I picked up one of the 17 R8s a couple of months ago, and it is a killer. I played a bunch of them in the store and there was not a dud to be found. Gibson really has their stuff together with these 17s.

Holy shit THAT is awesome !!!

Do you find the animal hide glue on the 2017 R9 to make any noticeable difference in tone? I know some guys are super picky about having their guitars made with animal hide glue. They say it make things sound less dampened

Not really between the 2016s and 2017. I will say there is a difference between my 2016/2017 and other pre-2016 Historic RIs that I own. Definitely a difference there and quite easily noticeable. Not sure if it is 100% due to the hide glue, tubeless truss rod, tighter tolerances... who can say for sure. But after playing LPs for 25 years... the last 2 years have definite been the most consistent and best sounding of the Historic Reissues. You don't even have to plug them into an amp to hear it either. They have this clear, bell-like, open, loud acoustic tone to them.

I'm sure there will be some strongly against the use of the glue due to animal rights issues etc.
