Looks awesome! congrats on the new LP

Thanks Matt. Try out one of the 2016/2017s when you can. I think you'll really like em.

What's the fretboard wood?

Solid Madagascar rosewood. They went back to solid/full thickness in 2012 iirc. Old school.

Those are both beautiful guitars. I've been wanting to upgrade my '03 Std and these kinds of threads tempt me so much. Lol, just when I thought I had finally got my Std totally dialed in with p'ups/etc...and I'm looking to replace it.

How are the pickups in these newer RIs? Do you stick with them or swap?

Do it.

The stock CustomBuckers sound great. If you play anything from '60s classic rock to '80s/'90s metal... you will most likely love them and keep them. For the more modern/extreme metal (death/prog/power) you will probably swap them out... but a bunch of aftermarket ceramic pups sound amazing in these RI LPs as well. I posted a few clips of my 16 R9 with the stock CustomBuckers thru my Diezel Herbert and VH4. Really crushing tones... and I doubt many would guess the pups used were PAF clones.
:D

I think I would like the Custombuckers. I usually use slightly overwound PAF types up to say a Duncan Custom 5, that's about as hot as I go. Are they potted? Those Burstbuckers could get squealie sometimes.

Yeah. My burstbuckers were too microphonic for me. I finally swapped them out of my R8 for Thornbuckers (Plus in the bridge). The low output PAFs work great in the historics. I'm actually thinking of replacing the Painkiller in my custom for some of these as well.

The CustomBuckers are definitely wax potted. Otherwise I'd be in squeal city right now.

I was surprised with these as well. Definitely more kick and articulation vs the BB3 for instance. I believe these are using an Alnico III magnet compared to the Alnico II in the BBs. Lots of easy harmonics with a high gain amp.
