I like it. But, I'm sorry.. Kirk Hammer is weak, and his solos suck, for the most part.

Weak how?

1.
lacking the power to perform physically demanding tasks; lacking physical strength and energy.
"she was recovering from the flu and was very weak"

2.
liable to break or give way under pressure; easily damaged.
"the salamander's tail may be broken off at a weak spot near the base"

:D

Kirk looks very strong here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXJifYl_byU

His leads are weak, and he always has a weak exit on them. He sucks.

I have to agree here, the weakest link on the album are the leads. Damn.

We have Testament with a new album also, did you hear the leads on it :D

What happened to Kirk damn it, he was never the most technical but did he have drive back then, melody and a story to tell with his lead work.

Ah well.

Kirk Hammett doesn't have to prove anything to you.

The guy is a legend. His work on KEA, RTL, MOP and AJFA is metal genius.

The new stuff? Well, ok. His place in metal history is cemented.

I agree too. I wonder what he thinks about it.

Kirk has great moments throughout the album. Great release overall....

My issues with Kirk:

The wah
The lack of vibrato
His comments about indie pedal makers
Lack of virtuosity

Look at the producer of the albums prior to the Black album. Maybe he'd do better if he didn't have Lars producing/directing his solos. And I find it interesting that the guys who rip on Hammet are often guys that praise Hetfield. You do realize that live Hammet plays pretty much the same thing as Hetfield right (plus the solos)? I don't know how one guy can be a god and another a bum.

Oh yes he does, he is a legend, he needs to up his game, the competition is fierce.

But the subject has been beaten to death. Not all by him on the new album is shit, but nothing grabs me like it used to. There is no authority to his leads no more.

Anyway, I really like the album, been a while since I can say this about Metallica.

Some one stated before that the rhythms on the earlier albums which he had to solo over were much more complex and interesting which quite possible made him have more interesting and thought out solos. He couldn't simply play an E Pentanic box solo. Makes sense to me.

I like Kirk. He has a handful of albums with one of the greatest bands ever with some of the most epic solos ever. He has nothing more to prove to me. He has always fit the band, and what a band.

One thing to consider is that non-guitar players (i.e. 99.99999% of Metallica's potential audience) pay about 1/75th the attention to guitar solos that lead guitar players/people posting on rig-talk do. All most people care is that it fits the overall vibe of the song and keeps the momentum going. Beyond that, having a virtuoso performance on a mainstream rock/metal album is like getting the highest grade on a pass/fail test.

In the same way that Adrian Smith doesn't play like Dave Murray?
Or I don't play like Yngwie?

Hetfields got the chops, can solo decent and sings at the same time and does a better job than Hammet who just has to think about guitar

I think Dave Mustaine summed him up perfectly...."He makes use of what talent he has." He's not terrible, but he's not great. He fits the band though. Not sure he'd work anywhere else. I like a few of his solos, he's had some moments in the past. Not many are terribly memorable to me though.

As to him being able to play everything James does? There's a reason he didn't play any rhythms on the older albums. In live recordings, you could hear his rhythm was very sloppy when James did his solos.

Kirk wrote the Sandman riff. It's an iconic riff & the song is their most well known by far......therefore Kirk is metallica's riff & solo master!
