New Metallica.. My thoughts..

Maybe they should switch up and let Hammett write more riffs and let Jamz play more solos ( like mdc1 just stated). Hammet has come up with some cool riffs (creeping death and sandman)

Uh, let's not get ridiculous now folks. :) James is the riff-master.

I love the album but there's only a handful of songs that sound like it's a whole band playing. I feel like the other songs sound more like a Hetfield solo album especially Halo on Fire. Kirks playing us fine does the guy get a little over praised... maybe. However a pretty good job at 54 and he could retire tommorrow and not give a shit because he's rich. So cut him some slack the album is solid outing production wise and it's a fun listen can't wait for the tour. I will say though it's not as metal as the new Testament album.

You needed a new thread for this nugget of wisdom?

baahaaahahahahahaha

That album suxs!!!! Couldn't even make it through one listen. As for Kirk he peaked in '84. His solos are the same wah bull shit every time(very juvenile).

^^^ well it's ok you don't like it I guess I'll have to hear your album when it comes out and see if it's better.

Interesting that you say that because I just realised it's kind of true. The album feels like Hetfield's solo project and it's hard to pinpoint why but here's my reasoning for it:

First: the songs are incredibly riff and vocal melody oriented, even more than other albums. For example the old stuff is incredibly riff oriented but the vocal melody was a bit less diverse and a little bit stiffer.

Second: The riffs are Hetfield like.... you can see that Kirk's riffs didn't make the album too much, maybe because he lost all his riffs and ideas and they ended up using more of Hetfield's but his style is predominantly in the album. If you listen to Load/Reload, the right speaker where Kirk lives has a lot of intricate melodies and harmonies that compliment James' riffs, whereas on Hardwire both sides feel like James.

Third: Drum sampling and automation is a little bit too strongly on this one, so it doesn't feel like Lars is playing the drums but an engineer programmed them. I don't hate on Lars at all, I just wished he would practice double bass a bit more so the parts that have double bass live would sound more consisten, but other than that I love his drumming style for Metallica. His accents, his fills and his overall vibe is great for that style and band IMO, and precisely THIS is missing, his swing and vibe, so you feel, again, that Hetfield is there alone with a drum Machine.

Fourth: The bass is solid and well executed and I like Trujilllo quite a lot but imo he was/is a safe bass player..... he is not overpowering which can be good, but can get him to drown out next to Hetfield's wall of Sound. Jason was a more powerful and present bass player who's presence especially live was very hard to miss. Even next to Hetfield live Jason stood out.

My god get over Kirk... he fits the music, and the band, does what lars and james say, all why playing to millions of people. There isn't one person on earth who wouldn't want that gig.

Nothing is as heavy as the new Testament album. :)

As a diehard fan, I am let down a bit. Sounds like all the melodies and riffs are forced.

Death Magnetic kills it as far as riffs and song writing. Favorite song on the album to me is MurderOne.

Crazy! Die hard fan as well and feel exactly opposite. Different strokes!

      for sure. funny how that works isn't it? i just haven't had any of them really reach out and grab me yet. atlas is pretty cool.

one thing.....i can hear them Wizard amps loud and clear in several of the songs from James and Kirk.

Moth to Flame is still my favorite but Murder One is starting to gain ground on it

They seem pretty mellow and reflective these days, and the music that matches that mood seems least forced/more natural and works better IMO. Now That We're Dead, Dream No More, Atlas Rise, Man Unkind are the standouts for me. When they try to go aggressive and hard, it does seem a little forced, but works now and then. Confusion seems to be winning the "Youtube Views" race among the songs that dropped on Nov 18th.

Overall, I am digging the whole album.

Funny thing....seems many don't care for Halo on Fire, but that Is the song most often in my head when not listening to the album. I really dig James' voice in the chorus parts where the instruments fade away and it is just his singing.

Anyway...

When I was younger I was convinced there was good music and bad music. Now I am convinced there is music that "moves" me and music that doesn't. Doesn't mean the stuff hat doesn't move me isn't good, it just doesn't do it for me.

When it comes to a whole catalogue, Metallica's music has done it for me more consistently than any other band.

This....Do agree. I have had to let this record "sink in" a bit. Overall....Strong record. Can be a bit redundant at times, but heavy / catchy stuff for the most part, and Hetfield REALLY shines vocally. It's an 8 out of 10 record for me. And I actually like the production value; seems to be a good mix of the the sharpness and "attack" of Death magnetic and the thickens and weight associated with the Bob Rock work with Metallica.

I agree. Just something about Metallica and their sound/songs as a whole that "moves" me also.

The more I listen to this new album the more I love it. Not a song on it I dislike. What a surprise. Never expected them to write such a killer album at this point in their career.

Confusion, Here Comes Revenge, Now That We're Dead, Halo on Fire, Spit Out The Bone are my favorites but I really enjoy every song a lot. One of those albums I can put in the CD player and just let rock from start to finish.

is it me or does it seem like Lars has been practicing (lol)?
