Ive been hearing the new stuff at the gym and it definitely stands out from most of the other horse shit I'm forced to listen to on our local "rock" station. I think it sounds good

Well when your comparing it to stuff that's playing on the radio, I could see how it might sound ok

James says they try something wacky and tear up the rules...I wish they really did that and let their Bass player write some riffs that go beyond the expected Metallica approach...and other self proclamations like "we don't do what is popular" is garbage. Load/Reload was a totally push to produce pop music, as was the no solo rule on St Anger. I get cranky because I think they could be better than this. You hear bits and pieces but...yeah

No way Load/Reload were done for popularity. IMO that was a super risky move since they were on top of the world after the Black album. Doing another album very similar to Black would have been the easy popularity route. St. Anger IMO really doesn't sound like anything else out there either. I just think the no solo thing was something they wanted to try. Just like using the upside down snare head on the whole album.

Not popular in terms of their already owned metal fan base, but popular in terms of the masses. Load/Reload is actually the best example "sellout for pop $". If that's not a sellout wtf is? LOL
I don't begrudge them for it, but they were a great metal band at that time but only ok at pop rock IMO

I'll have to get in a better mood and try their new stuff again

As a diehard fan, I am let down a bit. Sounds like all the melodies and riffs are forced.

Death Magnetic kills it as far as riffs and song writing. Favorite song on the album to me is MurderOne.

I just can't get past the tone, James voice and lars is way too high in the mix. Maybe I'm just old, but this album isn't grabbing me

This new album has already grabbed me. Loving the hell out of it from start to finish. Hell of a surprise for me. Really didn't expect to love this album that much. I did not care for St. Anger or Death Magnetic and didn't have high expectations for this one but I love it.

Probably alone on this...? I thought Kirk's soloing I thought was the best on the Black Album.

He needed to be produced and Rock did a good job pulling out melodic memorable solos from him. It got worse from there after he got hit with the mega blues... but Wherever I may Roam, Sandman, Unforgiven... really really amazing guitar solos.

Comfortable Kirk. He used to write solos. Now he just noodles. So does James to be fair. It's lazy, boring.

I worshipped them. What I hate is they did what they always do. Leak an uptempo track and then groove away on most of the rest. When I hear Lars saying he wants to open with the fast track it's just all so calculated. Playing us more than their instruments. Thrash is dead.

His leads are weak, and he always has a weak exit on them. He sucks.
Ya, well, he's made millions and owns homes on all these exotic beachfront surf breaks, surfs with Trujillo at all international spots on tour, has made a living playing metal, and is 25% of one of the most recognized metal bands in the world. Ever.

I think he sucks really well on many fronts. I'd like to suck to a fraction of this extent. Right place, right time - who knows. But his sucking and suckness have brought forth a wealth of goodness for him and his band.

Suck on Brother Hammett, and wah like there's no tomorrow... Suck on

And get this....

I've not heard *ONE* song from the new album yet except for that sneak-peek trailer clip that was out a few months ago.

I've been too busy perusing the medical marijuana products available online and having sex. Call me weak :dunno:

Wow Ventura, you're just so cool. When I grow up, I hope to have the life that you feel the need to always brag about on the interwebz.... :jerkit:

Been a die hard fan for 25 years. I love every song on the album.
Might be my favourite sounding album for guitars and for James vocals.
Just my Opinion.

I've been listening to Metallica since 85' and for this album I have everything separated into three sections. The first five songs, ManUnkind, and Spit Out the Bone are my favorites and can listen to them over and over. Then, the second group are great songs but don't pull me in completely like the first group. The only song I haven't bonded with, and might not ever, is Halo. I don't know what it is about that song but something doesn't pull me in. :)

I'm loving this album more by the day. Best Metallica for years IMO and best album of the year for me. To me they are back with this album. Sounds like 2016 Metallica. Not pushing to go back in time or trying stuff that does not work. I didn't feel St. Anger or Death Magnetic much but this album is amazing for me. For me Death Magnetic sounded forced and was Rick Rubin pushing them back in time and they were not doing what they really felt. IMO it didn't work.

This album is not their first 4 albums but it's true 2016 Metallica and sounds amazing IMO.

Well said, I agree (except Now That We're Dead and ManUNkind).

I also agree. I love every song. Now that we're dead and manUNkind are the two songs I just learned and are catchy riffs to play.

Megadeth and Testament have released better albums this year IMHO. Compared to this, Metallica just sounds average. It is not bad, but nothing on that album is really exiting to me.

Have all three...we are spoiled this year for

I was listening to the album again today and was thinking about what songs I like, etc. and curious what songs other people are liking.

For me, this is the order of best to worst:

Moth Into Flame
Hardwired
Atlas Arise
Dream No More
Now that We're Dead
Spit Out the Bone
ManUnkind
Am I Savage
Murder One
Here Comes Revenge
Confusion
Halo on Fire

I've been listening to the album in my car the last couple of days. I like it overall. Best production since Reload, imho.

Watching the accompanying videos skewed my perception of the songs I found...for example, I hadn't particularly cared for Here Comes Revenge....but the atmosphere of the video and the playing together, changed my opinion of the sng...a little bit the same with the Murder One...and the Spit out the Bone video was so much fun...so for me:

Spit out the Bone
Moth Into Flame
Murder One
Atlas Rise
Here Comes Revenge
ManUnkind
Hardwired
Halo On Fire
Now That We're Dead
Dream No More
Am I Savage
Confusion

...worth noting that my order will change between listens, there's some great stuff on here, like the production....my only wish would be more variability on the guitar solos.
