I'll be honest, it feels like your tube swaps kind of neutered the tone a bit. Preferred it as is but with gain rolled back. I'm going to message him today about a switch for gain reduction.

Hey, I noticed yours has a switch? Did you put that in or did it come that way? Mine has no switches.

Did you say you're using a PAF pickup? That second clip sounds awesome I think I'm going back to a preamp and a PV 60-60 or maybe I'll haul my 120-120 at a storage

It’s actually a cheapie First Act pickup that sounds pretty similar to my Sheptone tribute, which is their take on a PAF. So I just refer to it as being PAF-ish.

Yeah, it’s definitely neutered. To run a 12AT7 in the first two slots is pretty severe. It does still have a lot of gain and saturation if I turn the gain knob up to noon or higher. I just tried what I had on hand. My new tubes which will include a couple of 5751’s, won’t be here until Monday.
I did not add the switch. I believe the original purchaser ordered it with the bright switch as well as a second input jack on the back. I can send you some close ups of it from the inside if you want. Also curious to the response you get if you message him about a gain reduction mod.

Hi guys, this just in from Russia (with love)

" hi! try to replace 1meg gain pot to 500kA pot +470k resistor , or maybe solder to center lug of gain pot 1meg trimmer to gnd and try to set some comfortable position. OR add resistor divider before wire goes to gain pot."

He did say the easiest and quickest is just the POT switch from 1meg to 500K + resistor. This will make the gain more gradual and less overall I believe. That's ok by me, the thing is crazy gain saturated at just past noon. I might consider the trimmer to ground on a switch or something. Or I will just leave it and adjust gain with my ears and not my eyes!

Man, with 12AX7’s in there I feel it’s crazy gain saturated at 9 o’clock. I do love that sound, but I just wanted more crunchy tones in the land below crazy gain saturated. Past noon is just way too much for me. I feel the same way about the red channel on the 5153.

I’ll tell you though, I kind of by accident discovered one of the coolest high gain tones I’ve heard with this thing and a new guitar I got yesterday. I’ll have to wait until next week to post a clip though cause I took the guitar apart to refinish the body. Unless something drastic changes, this preamp is a keeper.

As far as his mod recommendations, 500k pot + 470 resistor sounds easy enough except I don’t know where to put the resistor.

Good point..I was assuming it would be to ground but I am not entirely sure..

He did follow up with this:

"resistor divider imho easiest than pot remove - try 470k+470k like soldano lucky13, later upper side maybe 330k or 220k"

So let's luck up the Soldano schems and see what is what.. or someone might chyme in.

Not sure what this preamp has in the gain pot area of the circuit, but the SLO has a 470k resistor feeding the gain pot (bypassed with a 0.002 uF capacitor) and also a 470k resistor between the wiper of the pot and the grid of V2a.

Did the builder eliminate one of these resistors and use a 1M potentiometer so what you're getting is more gain than the SLO circuit with the potentiometer past the 50% point (not necessarily halfway if its an audio taper)?
