My amp journey has taken me many places. At the moment, I am officially a Marshall convert.
The two amps shown below are both late 70's Marshall JMPs. The top is a 50 watt 2204 that has been modded with an FX loop. The bottom is a 2204 that has been heavily modded by Dave Friedman.
For hard rock, I'd give a slight nod to the Friedman modded JMP. It has the BE, HBE, and simple clean, plus some extra bonus switches on the back. I can get the 2204 with a Boss OD-1 pretty close to the Friedman, but I prefer the feel of the Friedman mod just a little bit more.
For live use, I have gigged with the Friedman. It sounds great, but it's a little on the fragile side. When i first got it, it had taken a bump while shipping and had to be repaired by Dave. Also, I need to take a look at the FX loop since it has started cutting in an out, which I believe to be just some solder joint issues with the send, and return jacks. But, I think I'll just retire it for home/ recording use for the time being.
My live go to amp will be the 2204. I've gotten it to sound pretty dang close to the Friedman with the Boss OD-1 , so I say it's good enough. I am setting the JMP's gain at around 3:00, which let's me get a high-gain with the OD-1 engaged, and get a medium gain with it off. If I need to get cleaner, I just back off with my guitar volume. I love this so much more than stepping on footswitches or extra pedals.
Speaking of pedals, love having as little stuff to step on as possible. I handle backup vox and lead/ rhythm guitar with my band, so I have a lot going on usually. Basically, I have a modded Boss DSD-2 in the loop. It's modded to have a darker delay sound with the flick of a 3 way toggle switch. As mentioned before, I use the OD-1 for my high gain tone, and if I need any sort of modulation, I stomp on the Phase 45. The EHX Freeze pedal is out of the way just in case I need some sort of 'pad' type sound.
The cab in the pic is a Marshall JCM800 with original Celestion G1265's. They are a bit darker than V30's, and they pair nicely with the Marshalls. Although, I'll probably continue to take my beat to hell Port City 4x12 out to shows.
That's pretty much it!
