My amp journey has taken me many places. At the moment, I am officially a Marshall convert.

The two amps shown below are both late 70's Marshall JMPs. The top is a 50 watt 2204 that has been modded with an FX loop. The bottom is a 2204 that has been heavily modded by Dave Friedman.

For hard rock, I'd give a slight nod to the Friedman modded JMP. It has the BE, HBE, and simple clean, plus some extra bonus switches on the back. I can get the 2204 with a Boss OD-1 pretty close to the Friedman, but I prefer the feel of the Friedman mod just a little bit more.

For live use, I have gigged with the Friedman. It sounds great, but it's a little on the fragile side. When i first got it, it had taken a bump while shipping and had to be repaired by Dave. Also, I need to take a look at the FX loop since it has started cutting in an out, which I believe to be just some solder joint issues with the send, and return jacks. But, I think I'll just retire it for home/ recording use for the time being.

My live go to amp will be the 2204. I've gotten it to sound pretty dang close to the Friedman with the Boss OD-1 , so I say it's good enough. I am setting the JMP's gain at around 3:00, which let's me get a high-gain with the OD-1 engaged, and get a medium gain with it off. If I need to get cleaner, I just back off with my guitar volume. I love this so much more than stepping on footswitches or extra pedals.

Speaking of pedals, love having as little stuff to step on as possible. I handle backup vox and lead/ rhythm guitar with my band, so I have a lot going on usually. Basically, I have a modded Boss DSD-2 in the loop. It's modded to have a darker delay sound with the flick of a 3 way toggle switch. As mentioned before, I use the OD-1 for my high gain tone, and if I need any sort of modulation, I stomp on the Phase 45. The EHX Freeze pedal is out of the way just in case I need some sort of 'pad' type sound.

The cab in the pic is a Marshall JCM800 with original Celestion G1265's. They are a bit darker than V30's, and they pair nicely with the Marshalls. Although, I'll probably continue to take my beat to hell Port City 4x12 out to shows.

That's pretty much it!

I want a 2204 JMP so bad... These pictures only make matters worse. Got any clips?

No secret here, everyone always comes back to what works.... a JMP/2204 with pedals. Any major differences between the OD-1 and an SD-1? off the shelf Taiwanese sd-1 is my go to at the moment. Koko boost for a bit more oomph on fast leads as I don't set the drive very high on the sd-1.

I'm with you guys. After all these modded Marshalls, SLO, 5153, etc etc I have gone back to stock Marshalls..'84 2203 and '87 2205. I might trade an 80s MIJ Charvel for a VHT Deliverance 60 this week but my main go to rig is my 2203+pedals and one of 2 G12 65 Vintage Marshall cabs..perfect for an 800. It just works.

I have OD-1 14 pin chip type and an SD-1
The OD-1 has a tighter playing feel on the bottom end compared to my SD1 and it does not have as much bass and sounds and feels gainier than the SD1.
The OD-1 is my go to pedal with a 2203 or 2204

I did have the 2204 for sale, but that was only cause I was in need of $. My situation has stabilized thankfully, and it's here to stay. :)

Hey man, I love my 2204. Try some different speakers. I like the 65's. But I think mine sounds better with the 80's G12T75 cab that came with it. Sounds a lttle meaner. And before everybody piles on me, if you have one just try it. I've tried several speakers and always come back to the 75. Although, I like the 65 almost as much but it's just a hair smoother.

Great amps though. With different guitars ans pickup, you can cover a ton of ground.

Over the years, I've probably owned at least 5 Marshall 1960 cabs w/ G12T75's. I always end up selling them, but I keep rebuying them. Go figure. I don't have one at the moment, but that will change at some point.

I've added some youtube vids of the new rig. Check the first post!

oooooohhhhhh!!!!!!!that crunch.

i love it!!

Oh yeah! The 2204 is my favorite of the 2203/ 2204 design. You get that crunch just a little earlier.

great stuff =0 what guitar is that btw, parts build or something?

slamming the front end with an EQ as a boost tends to give great results, i've got an 2204 jcm800 from 83, screeaams just don't get to play it much, living in an appartment

yeh, thanks, now i'm gonna spend the next week or 2 looking for another Marshall. i hope you're happy. this is why i don't have nice things!
