New Soldano SLO - Available at Sweetwater

The nostalgia for the "old" is strong in this thread. I personally think people allow nostalgia to color their opinions. Especially when it comes to gear. Certainly are exceptions, but I believe they are rare.

For pure playability, (sound, functionality, reliability) I'll take a Suhr SL68 over an original 68 Plexi anyday of the week and twice on Sunday. The only reason I would get an original Plexi is to make money by selling to someone longing for the good old days.

Regarding the SLO clip, sounds like an SLO to me. In-room may tell a different story, regarding feel and attack though.

I pulled the trigger on one today. NGD coming next week.

I have been going back and forth on new model versus old. In the end, the features of the new model that are lacking or different in the old made it a pretty easy decision for me to buy the new model. To be completely honest, I actually feel like I’d be missing something and not satisfied if I bought the old one and that has nothing to do with the comments in this thread. I’ve always leaned towards new is better and improves upon the old, for right or wrong.

At least it's cheaper than some of the used ones people were selling on Reverb. Those prices were crazy, hopefully there'll be some rationalisation of the used prices.

Yup, hopefully some sellers will come to their senses...the most expensive one on there (snakeskin with KT66) won't even bias correctly according to the previous owner.......hence why he hasn't put in $50 of 5881s, despite even saying in the listing "I highly recommend changing to the Sovtek 5881 power tubes."

This is great. Love the chat pic. Everybodys a keyboard cowboy these days. What you could not possibly know is the amp was sold under the pretence that it was purposely built to take KT66 tubes. This was not the case. The bias was set as low as it would go to use the Kt66 and was borderline too high. Had the amp been played at higher volumes they would have been short lived. Yes it will work but was it built to do so; absolutely not. Biased fine with the intended 5881. I explained this to Jonathan. How someone takes factual information and twists it to suit their need is beyond me. I spent alot of time cleaning up the misrepresented cab, that was part of the purchase, that I bought from him. Not only was the top covered in tan latex paint but it was on the grill cloth as well. The speakers were covered in about a half inch of dirt. This was after I drove 6.5 hours, one way to pick it up. When you take pictures of something to sell they should tell the whole story not just part of it. I wanted to sell the amp and cab just like I received it except cleaner. I offered to retube the entire amp and bias it. But not for nothing. I forgot to mention that it had a hodge podge collection of preamp tubes. It was not tactical it was whatever they had in tubes at the moment. He led me to believe he was going to buy the head back right up until I was ready to go out the door to ship it. I spent over an hour cutting a box down and getting it packed. Then nothing from him.

Some people lie like they breathe and are fine with it. And sometimes Karma gets them back. Gotta love that 5150.

As far as the original dropping in price, maybe. But I doubt it will. Owned the new SLO for a while now. And I will keep the original with the correct 5881 and proper preamp tubes. The new SLO will not replace the original.

That SLO worked
Fine for quite a while with the kt66, the FACTORY BIASED KT66, from Mike directly. Played with volume was never an issue. It was the most reliable and best sounding SLO I’ve owned or played. You bought it, swapped tubes, then states the KT66 wouldn’t bias correctly. So it biased right when I had it but not after you started swapping and rebiasing. Doesn’t sound good. Claiming Mike Soldanos run of KT66 amps were faulty or problematic or whatever is a little left field.

On another note, not sure why you choose to dog me here, I did not do it to you. Also with 100% eBay feedback for 18 years, 4 years on Reverb with no negatives deals and 17 years of TGP without a single negative deal, almost 100 amp deals in the last couple of years, I’ve only had 3 issues; Abbath78, which he even admitted to lying and reselling the amp while claiming it didn’t work, a 5150 that I got with an incorrectly done mod and all smashed tubes, and you. Technically, though, you and I had no issues and had a very easy and agreeable deal. Not once have I ever done a deal and someone felt ripped off or cheated, because that’s not me. Not at all. You walked into my living room and check everything out and I played through the amp and speakers. If you didn’t like the way something looked, you could have said something there and then. Not only that, but you are
Complaining about the speakers, when I am pretty sure I gave you the 412 for free as part of the deal. If you didn’t like the cab you could have said that, would have been fine. But don’t complain here when you stood in my house and said everything looked good.

On another note, I have no animosity nor hold any hard feelings. On the grand scale of life a tube amp doesn’t hold a candle to the things that really matter at the end of the day.

Looking to get some user opinions on those who have picked up or at least played a new SLO. How are you enjoying it? Any noticeable changes good or bad, over the older models?

I don’t know about changes. I think they sound the same personally, but I sold mine, just wasn’t for me. No low end and just was flubby as hell in the low mids. It’s cool for a lot of tones I’m sure, but not for me.

For standard tuning rock, or lower/heavier? What guitar and cabs out of interest?

I’ve got 5 cabs brotha. Marshall 1960BV, Mesa OS recto cab, Engl 4x12 with 65 watt creambacks, bogner Uber cab, 1978 Marshall with greenbacks... it’s a cool sounding amp, I just think it’s.... ( I know you can’t say that here or anywhere right now).... super overrated. But again, depends on what you want. It can do the 80s thing great, I mean of course! But for anything heavier than that, it just fell apart, the saturation was all wrong to me, and seriously, no low end, Atleast not the low end I want. It’s an amp I wanted for over 20+ years, got it, and just was like... eh, it’s cool, but not 4000 dollars cool. Take it for what it’s worth, not trying to ruin someone’s parade that loves it, I just think people need a reality check on what that amp actually does. I will say, it’s way more versatile than I thought it would be, I thought the clean and crunch was great, but the high gain tone left a lot to be desired... for me.

Yeah cool man, just curious. Thanks for your input (y)

Bought mine (the new one) last year from The Music Zoo. Still loving it. I'm a set-it-and-forget-it person, I dialed in a setting I like and just play. Just a great sound every time I turn it on.

Nice. What kind of stuff do you play?

I have a 1993 and a 2010. I play death metal on mine without any issue. No Ubershcall or Herbert level of bass obviously but I found that it holds together at low tuning and high volume very well. It probably doesn't gel too well with V30's though, but I have none in my cabs.

No experience on the new ones unfortunately.

Honest assessment.

I will reserve opinion on these until I can hear them without Deyoungs. Everybody assumes that these amp makers are transformer gurus as well, and that is rarely the case. They know general specs but winding them is not the same.

The originals with the Deyoungs will always demand more money. To disregard the Deyoungs would mean that a SLO clone would be as good as the real deal, which I have yet to hear one that is as good.

There was one SLO clone i heard years ago. It was spectacular. Id buy it on the spot if i could find it.
I have no idea where it is now.

I just wish for once someone would do a vid of the new SLO tuned at standard A440 , and play different styles of lead and rhythm guitar parts clean to dirty .
Not everyone these days plays detuned with chuga chuga raw gain and leads with effects .
And turn the damn MV UP to atleast 6-7 , the SLO does'nt open up and start to sing until you actually drive the power section .
^^^^ yea, use the 4 strings on the guitar and stop using IRs
