Hey all. I was a member here a loooooong time ago, but was unable to recover my old account.
Anywho, after (stupidly) selling my beloved 2007 VH4, I picked up a 2006 for a song.
It’s a bit worse for wear. I’m about to re-tolex it to correct the horribly-done “carbon fiber” tolex (I’m going wine red or purple) and contacted Diezel about new front and rear grille plates, because the previous owner did an awful job of spray painting them gloss black. Big deep clean, had to replace a bunch of corroded hardware, etc. It’s slowly coming back up to looking proper.
That being said, I was wondering if anyone had any details about this year/era of the VH4. I’ve done a ton of searching and reading over the last few months since I acquired it, but that’s been less than fruitful.
It’s significantly darker than my ‘07 and a ‘03/‘04 that I used extensively on an album last year. Quite bloated sounding. Don’t get me wrong, it sounds incredible, but I’m finding I have to run the mid and bass on channels 3 and 4 around 9:00, while the other VH4s I’ve used, everything at 1:00 was usually a good starting point.
As far as I can tell by date codes, it has the stock tubes (Ruby EL34 and 12AX7s). It’s going to be getting a retube soon, and I’m considering KT77’s, as those were excellent in my last VH4. My serial number is 060676 signed by Stefan.
So, what’s the scoop with the 2006 era amps? Is there anything I can do to reduce some of the low mid bloat? Also, with the age, I’m considering passing it along to my tech for a full service and to see if any caps are on their way out. What about that negative feedback mod?
Sorry, I know it’s a lot for a “first” post. I feel like
I’ve been bothering Papa D too much lately, and figured I’d toss it off to you cats.
Cheers!
