Did someone already post this here? Anyways, this guy is a great player. He had a signature model from Fibenare, actually a few I think? I wonder why he switched to Ibanez? Those Fibenare are great guitars, at least their single cut is.

here is the Ibanez:

here is a Fibenare:

which would you choose? actually, maybe Ibanez pays him better than just kicking him free guitars. Wait, didn't Quayle used to be endorsed by Suhr? So, from Suhr to Fibenare, to Ibanez? Rick Graham went from Suhr, to ESP, to Ibanez.

The guitar playing industry needs new Steve Vais.

I was just about to post this as well. Glad I checked.

Pretty rad guitar.

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=194057 :D No worries!

Yeah, I've recently thought about how such artists have gone through such an evolution in a relatively short time.....just to end up at Ibanez. Both of these amazingly talented guitarists were once at Suhr which IMO was the best fit. But, I guess money talks. I just can't imagine being with someone like Suhr and in the end just turning your back on them and settling for Ibanez? I mean, they have to be thinking in the back of their mind...."this doesn't really live up to the Suhr I once had, but I'll make do with it."....or something?

Don't get me wrong, Ibanez makes good guitars, and I'm going to be looking at the AZ series in the future myself.....but, I just think a builder like Suhr is on a whole other level. Just my opinion anyways.

Yeap, many players switched back to Ibanez over the last 2 years: Rick Graham, Martin Miller, Tom Quayle, Marty Friedman at some point... I guess Ibanez has the power to provide more advantages to popular players among the community than Suhr or other "boutique" brands like Fibenare. I just haven't made up my mind if that's a good thing or not to switch brand that often. Take Marty Friedman for example. The guy went from PRS to Ibanez back to Jackson over the last 5 years. What's the point? Why do you need that as a guitar player? Why don't you take the time to developp a relation with the brand, and developp a product. They're just like football players. That's something I always liked about guys like Petrucci. He just seem to have develop a real relation with Ernie Balls.

Yep, oddly enough as I began to read your reply Petrucci immediately came to mind. He was with Ibanez for the better part of ten years and then switched only once to EBMM and has continually worked to develop the great relationship they have, which has benefited both Music Man and Petrucci greatly. Seems to be real loyalty there. I for one always thought that Ibanez dropped the ball when dealing with Petrucci....taking him for granted and not really trying to advance their relationship. I think I remember him remarking that he couldn't even get them interested in creating his own 7-string model for him. Just look at how many different models EBMM has created for Petrucci since joining them.

I don’t think the artist gets an off the rack guitar. I think they get a “prototype” that is built in the custom shop so I’d think it’s probably higher quality.

Very happy for Tom. He's a good guy and I hope this works well for him for a long time.

I was super pumped to see the AZ line and see them reach out to a group that might have been a little alienated with their more "metal" guitars. Ibanez stuff kicks all kinds of ass as far as playability but this line seems to appeal to me more. Just my opinion.

Will I buy one? $2k for a Japanese or $1300 for the indonesian....I'll probably try to wait for the used market, seems a little steep for imports. I'm sure the MIJ models will be fantastic but damn that seems high.

I feel the same way. This series definitely appeals to me more than their regular stuff. The prices are indeed ludicrous. I'll probably be looking at the used market as well. For the Japanese models, I would have priced them about $1500-$1600 tops....the Indonesian about $800-$900. They could sell a whole lot more of them if the prices were closer to my figures. $2000??? That's Suhr territory....come on? Of course I can see why their J Customs are priced in the high range, due to them being the best they offer. The AZ line should be lower.

not in Europe tho. 2000 Eur will hardly get you a "lesser" Suhr like a Satin but for a full blown Suhr you'll have to go much higher... so perhaps they'll do better here than in the US.

One thing's for certain....they picked a hell of a player for a signature model. DAMN he can play!

These seem to be in the same price point as the Jem and AT lines. Ibanez makes a fantastic guitar. I would put their Team J-Craft stuff up against Suhr any day. If they don't move at their initial price point, I'm sure that they will come down. I think that this is an excellent move by Ibanez. In the late 80s and early 90s, if you wanted the best shred stick, you got an Ibanez. (debatable I know) Why shouldn't they try to recapture that throne? Ibanez has surrounded itself with top players for decades.

I have no problems with the Suhrs, Tylers and Tom Andersons of the industry. The AT line brings another option for players. We are really in the golden age of guitars. There are high quality guitars all over the place. You simply have to pick what works for you. Guthrie went to Charvel and now Tom has gone to Ibanez. I am sure that they are trying to make financial decisions based on their best interests. I have no problem with that. I'm looking forward to trying one of the AZ guitars. They will probably be much easier to find in local stores than Suhr.

There's a big thread on TGP about it. Turned into a typical shitstorm where Tom himself chimed in. A few Aholes questioned why he deserves a sig model. Soo many dickheads out there.
